What's new

OK, help me figure out Razorock G37...

I've had it for five years. Haven't used it all that much.

I can only describe it as a combination of aggressive yet not highly efficient.

That is, it can bite if I am not careful, yet it requires extra cleanup to get BBS.

Practically every shave I have with it, requires extra passes, and leaves me with a couple red spots or small cuts in unexpected places.

I've been wet shaving for years, and can easily get a drama free, close and comfortable 3-pass shave with a medium aggressive (and efficient) razor like Maggard V3A or Mühle R41 and a sharp blade.

Just today, I pulled G37 out of storage and shaved with a Perma-sharp on its 5th use, when it's still pretty sharp but not super sharp. Had to get extra passes under the chin and on the jawline, and got a painful (if not very large) nick in what typically is a "safe" spot. And, I practically never nick myself.

The blade alignment is fine - that's the first thing I always check.

I tried different blades in it, all about the same effect.

It also doesn't seem to be super sensitive to the shaving angle.

So, am I missing something, or is it just not a good match ?

I don't consider myself very experienced with DE razors, but when that happens to me, I think it's because my technique is lacking. As far as I can tell, razors considered to be more "mild" are more sensitive to the shaving angle being exactly right. But I have only been using DE razors for a couple of years now, so I might be completely wrong. It might be that the G37 isn't a good fit for your style.

I had a G37 for a while and found it a little too mild, like the FOCS. It didn't require any particular technique or care.

I'm surprised it is biting so frequently. Maybe try shaving with it for a week or so consistently, and not worry about the outcome of the shave, but focus on the blade feel?

Slants really started to click perfectly with me when I started using Permasharps (Gillette/russia) and the Gillette/russia Gillette Platinum “Swedes”

Any sharper and my skin was raw, any milder and the shave stunk.

That was me and the game changer 84.

What helped was blade testing. I found the derby extra to be the only blade, as of now, that really changed the razor for me. Weird right?

Keep testing it, use it with the most horrible blades you’ve used in the past and promised to never use it again, believe me, one day you might have a nice surprise.

There may be no finer homage to the Merkur 37 than to say the G37 shaves just like it. :) For good or ill.

Seems to me that very little improvement is possible for the Merkur 37. Which is to say that the design parameters of the razor pretty much make it what it is and that's gotta be good enough. Changing it to reflect more modern sensibility would make it a different razor entirely -- but the cool thing is RazoRock has you covered if you want to try something a bit more recent in design.

Yeah...blades. You're holding a Canadian copy of a late-'40s German razor. I've used a lot of slants including both of the ones mentioned here, and I like Astra SP blades with them. Anything milder doesn't shave for me; anything wilder gets "a little close to the bone."

O.H.

This razor works well for me with mid-sharp blades. I normally don't care for the Astra SP, but they are a good match for the G37. Other blades that you usually keep in the back of the drawer can work well.

This razor is supposed to be smooth. You don't need a lot of pressure. Find the shaving angle that is fairly neutral and also feels smooth. It is not as aggressive as the R41, so you can probably get the hang of it with some practice.

I lived through everything you describe in your original post when I first got my FOCS...except the quote above.

With a shallow angle it felt as if I was peeling the first layer of skin off my face but a steep angle solved everything. Now I really like my FOCS.

I’ve never tried a 37 slant, but perhaps try it one last time with a steeper angle you usually use.

I may do just that. Used it with a fresh Rapira Stainless to see if a different blade would work better. This shave was more comfortable but the stubble is already starting to appear 2.5 hours later. I think it’s just not “my” razor.

Also, I just don’t see the benefits of having a slant, at least not with this one.

When I used the “German” 37 more frequently, I found riding the bar made the shave smoother and going towards the cap made it more aggressive. And it sometimes needed an extra pass to be close enough.

And I shave on a regular basis with a Merkur 37C razor. I didn't immediately appreciate it. Of course, it's been much less than five years. But now it's my favorite razor.

If your 37C has been manufactured 2015 or later, it is milder than the RR German 37 discussed here.

I bought the G37, tried it, gave it a fair shot, and concluded there’s nothing special about a slant.
