Longer handles better

I expect it is going to depend on you. Some people profess a need for long handle or dislike of short handle.

For what it is worth, I hold razor at the bottom of handle with thumb and two fingers. I think holding razor up on the handle can tend to result in more pressure than you should use, or need. Short handle doesn't bother me.

Different strokes for different folks.

i prefer shorter handles in general. It's all about balance and how it feels in our hand when you put it to our face.

My first razor, a Schick Krona, was longer but I really prefer a shorter 3" handle now.

I believe it is simply user preference. I have big hands so long handles feel better with my shave style. I'm sure others will prefer shorter handled razors.

depends. i like a longer than most of the 3" handles more like a 3.25-3.5" but anything longer im not a fan of very much. i picked up a t1 handle which imo is a bit longer than i expected and while its a really nice handle i tried it on my fatip which i usually use with a ikon oss handle right now and the t1 was just akward and not as nice to use. but i used it on my ej89 and it still was a bit longer than i found i like but it was much better than the fatip

I suggest that you first learn to hold the handle using the "balance point method" (aka BPM).

If then you find the need for a different handle you can experiment with different diameters, weights, and lengths. Longer and heavier handles need not cost a lot. For example the 4" Sabi T1 handle (and head) costs only $15 from shaveabuck.com.

One advantage of 3 piece razors is the frequent ability to pair your favorite handles with heads from different razors. Member Turtle does this frequently: here is a picture of his "free range" heads and handles.

I like longer and heavier handles myself.

I also believe it belongs to the users preference. But it seems that people with big hands prefer long handles. Me too. I never know how to hold a short handle and shave comfortable. But everybody has to try what works best for him.

I like a 3" handle also. Just feels comfortable in the hand.
I found that my Feather AS-D1 got significantly better when I switched the handle to a Weber Bulldog (3 inch). At first I didn't realize but then it struck me: the handle of most vintage Gillettes are about that long! I had been shaving with vintage Gillettes for over 5 years when I started using the Feather!

I am a big guy so I like big handles. I find long, light handles (wood, horn) to be more maneuverable than all-metal handles, but I own and like both types.

I have big hands too, but for me, it's not about the length as much as the thickness. I tried a Gillette Slim, but it just didn't feel right. However, when I tried a Fatboy, the thicker handle feels a lot better in my hand, even though it's a little shorter.

Just echoing what everyone has said about personal preference. I prefer a longer handle as I grip close to head which allows the end of the handle to either anchor in my palm or toward the outside of my hand.

They are just different.

I have several custom razors, all with different length handles.

I do not have a preference as far as the length of the handle goes.

I just use what feels right for the head I want to shave with

as mentioned the better the grip, the better accuracy and self-confindence you have when you shave, no matter if you have a long or short handle
