Light roast

Ok....I've heard of people getting a "green" taste when roasting maybe to light. How light are you going? Before the first crack?
Also, what bean are you using for this? The beans I normally buy suggest roasting to a city, or darker.

If you roast too light the coffee simply isn't drinkable. A taste like wet hay or grass is more than a defect. I don't think the type of bean matters. Some do better at darker or lighter roasts, yes but no matter the bean you have to get it to a certain minimum level.

I've tried beans that were taken out pre-first crack and they went to landfill. They were awful.

For Espresso, I cool at very first snap of 2nd crack. For vac pot and French Press, normally just before 2nd crack.

Good to know. My first green bean order, an 8lb sampler from Sweet Maria's, is scheduled to arrive today. Seeing as how French Press and Espresso are the two brewing methods I use exclusively, this will serve as a good jumping off point as I begin the home roasting journey.

Sweet Marias includes the recommended degree of roast and other pertinent information on a sticker attached to each bag of green. When you have a few varieties kicking around it's helpful. Have fun. Home roasting is great and with a little experience you will get great results!
