What's new

Life in the shaving desert ...

As new DE shaver, I have discovered that the foam-n-go shave that I was used to with cartridges doesn't fly. At the very least, you need a good soap and an aftershave.

I like the soap rather than cream, and, after quickly learning that balms don't work so well for me, I'm on the witch hazel swab/alcohol AS train.

Now I know what I like, I can just go get it ... simple enough, right?

Nope.

Here in Rochester, I've made the tour for the basics--grocery stores, drugstores, discount/overstock stores, beauty supply stores, malls, etc., and they're all the same--Aqua Velva, Brut, Skin Bracer, Old Spice, and, occasionally, Clubman. Soaps are Williams and VDH. Almost across the board, and what little variation there is isn't notable. The VDH/Clubman combo is the best of what's around, but the wife isn't exactly hot for a man that smells like her grandpa.

For other brands, I can get the C&E but don't like the scents, and can't afford the Truefitt and Hill at the high end men's salon.

I've gone online, for a second round of stab-in-the-dark experimentation (the first didn't go so well--I don't want to talk about it), and I have some conks and tabac, as well as some bay rum AS and Florida water, on the way. I've even taken a stab at making my own soap (not half bad, actually). But the lack of local availability is really frustrating, especially given the variety of scents involved.

I'm just venting, really, but I am curious--how many of you are also in the shaving desert, and how do you deal with it?

Is there a natural food store?
kiss my face creams lather up really well. one can find quality natural aftershaves as well. typically for only a few more dollars then drug store offerings.

Surprising lack of aftershaves at the local natural store--plenty of witch hazel, essential oils, glycerin, and about anything else you'd need to make your own, but that's still a very experimental move for me.

The wife uses KMF on her legs, and that's actually what I started with since we had it sitting around, but the range of scents available doesn't really grab me. Same with the small selection of Burt's Bees there.

Go to the mall. Go to Bath and Body Works. Buy a BIG tube ($10) of the C.O. Bigelowe Shaving Cream. Apply with a proper brush, and learn to love the creamy goodness that is re-packaged Proraso.

Seriously, I don't think anywhere outside of NYC and Chicago have a great huge selection of shaving goodies. I know I sure haven't found any in Florida! Check out West Coast Shaving, and order yourself some Speick (cream or shave stick), along with some Musgo Real splash. You can thank me later.:wink::wink:

At least where I live I guess most/all retailers figure there's just not enough of a market for the decent stuff for them to carry it.
I'm afraid they're probably right, with P&G's Gillette's amazing/overwhelming cartridge marketing/merchandising machine overwhelming the senses of the average man when it come to purchasing supplies for what he considers a time-consuming nuisance.

I take a dual approach.
First I go online for some decent stuff.
Then, while I'm using that, I dig up some threads on B&B for making the cheap stuff work. An example would be using Williams' Mug as the base for superlather. I've found that the generic store-labeled Persona blades are sufficient; not great, not my favorite, and I'll make it a regular habit to get blades online soon's I finish my WCS sampler pack, but in a pinch sufficient.

Good luck! :)

I'm kind of in the same boat. I just result to ordering things offline if I want anything special. It really hasn't been much of a problem it's just more expensive this way.

I live in Newfoundland, the arsehole of the planet when it comes to anything shave related. Just lucky I was very well stocked when I left Ontario last year.

Well, I'm livin' in the shave desert of Mexico - disposable DE land and Gillette goop in a tub. Sure, you can buy 'Mejoradas' (good blades I am learning to like) but as for A/S, soaps etc...fuhgeddaboutit!

Thank the saints for the teh Interweb, and the fact we're a five hour drive from the Texas border and our mailbox in McAllen.

well, since turning to the DE side of things, I've quickly discovered that certain things are not so readily available here in Malaysia. Razors are at best limited to Chinese made knock-offs (not they're all that bad but I like my Vintage Slim Adjustable better). Good brushes are a rare thing to see. (Forget badger, getting a decent boar is a big effort here). Blades are OK (no Feathers here, at least I can get BIC Platinums). Soaps are non existent. Creams while limited to Indian made Godrej (no complaints at all about those) are also kinda scarce.

So, I've turned to the Interwebs for razors, traded Godrej creams for soaps with B&B members and relied on groups like GSL (the Aussie group here in B&B) and the BST section for all my needs. Has worked very very well so far. Also found some nice stuff in Singapore so friends/relatives who visit usually come back with Kai Blades, Tabac and Omega (by the way, +1 on the C.O. Bigelow Shaving Cream. Omega is also made by the same guys who make Proraso. One of the best soaps/creams I've ever used). Good Luck with yer hunt!!

The internet is kinda it for me. No product sampling to speak of, except the normal drugstore and bath and bodyworks fare. I end up buying some stuff I really wish I hadn't, just because I couldn't smell/ try it out first. Frankly, unless you live in one of the 10-20 big cities in this country, you're probably SOL just like me.

Australia is a shaving desert, apart form c&e loccitane, there is nothing avaliable in shops.

The internet is our friend. Both shops and the BST

Wow ... I am shamed for complaining ... Rochester's no shaving mecca, but I seem to be much better of than our compatriots in Malaysia and Mexico.

At the very least, my mailbox is at my door, rather than five hours away, and in another country.

Unless you are very fortunate and have an apartment in the St James area of London then you are going to be in a desert:lol: comparatively speaking

I can get the basics (Wilkinson Blades and brushes, Personna blades, palmolive, erasmic, wilkinson, Ingrams, Boots soaps/creams) within a 5 minute walk of where I live. But decent brushes, razors, and anything more exotic then it is the intrernet.

There is Body Shop and C&E a 30 min walk away too.

Most of my purchases though are internet or visits to Jermyn Street. I actually quite like the idea that Trumper Creams and colognes are not available on every corner.

I use the Internet, B/S/T and for a/s Sallys Beauty Supply for clubman and kmart for Aqua Velva.. Everything else is marketed for canned goop and cartridge razors.. +1 on the Bath and Bodyworks for Proraso shave cream *co bigelow*.. Tabac, Proraso Green Soap, Mama Bear Soap and even The Body Shop Original formula s/c all came from b/s/t, ebay and internet.. Derby blades got off ebay, same with my Super Speed. My Slim Adjustable, Astra Superiors, Feathers, HD Slant and Sledgehammer Stants all came from b/s/t from this site... So as you can tell SB/Goleta california is a desert with a couple of shops that actually sells brushes and razors for far more then what I paid for my bbe and c&e bbb.

Cheers,

Went to the mall today--I missed the BBW mens section before, buried as it is on two shelves in the back. I picked up a tube of the CO Bigelow, and will give it a try tomorrow.

I hope it's as good as advertised--it's the first day of the semester, and I don't want to have to face the freshmen with a bad shave

Just make sure that you beat the crap of it and get it nice and lathered up, and you'll be good to go. If you want a real treat, order some Speick cream and mix equal amounts of that the the Proraso/C.O. Bigelowe you just bought. Lovely smell and a great lather.
