What's new

Let me try and start

After 7 months of great DE shaves I have always been envious of SS so last week I bought a Sanguine shavette thinking it would be less dangerous than a straight and also to avoid stropping (something I was afraid of doing so to dull the blade).

After this week I have several nicks and cuts, some of them pretty nasty. So I have decided to move to a straight. It can´t go worst than this I think as I have read that straights are more forgiving than shavettes. After reading I was decided to get a Dovo 6/8 from here

http://www.dovorazors.com/stockrazors.html as it says it comes shave ready and was a recommended honemeister.Has anyone have any experience with them to see if that is true enough?

But also am tempted to ask Larry at Whipped Dog for one of his,but so far all I see have a spike nose (I think is called that way) and sincerely I am afraid of poking it into my cheek.

Not so worried of stropping because I will start with newspaper and a cheap strop.

Thanks for all your good advice and help.

Why don't you drop Larry a note and see if he has a round point that he just hasn't advertised on his site yet? The Dovo is a good option but I think if you can one off Larry that you're happy with, it's a better option.

Ditto. And it won't be much of an investment if you decide if it isn't for you.

I made the same mistake. I tried a shavette and hacked my face up for a week before getting a proper razor. Anyway, if Larry doesn't have what your looking for, I just ordered a Dovo Stainless Steel 5/8 in Ebony from classicshaving.com. It can shave ready and was shipped in 1 day with 1st class shipping (cost $5 extra). Very good service. Whatever option you chose good luck with your straight shaving journey.

I received a quick reply from Larry sugesting a Richard Korkemas that is an 11/16 and says it can have the spike tip dulled if I want to make it safer.

Anyone has feed back from the Dovo UK page service?

I've bought two str8s from Larry so far, great guy. I also had both tips blunted so as to not do to much harm to myself

The Spike is sometimes muted on some razors, if it is, it doesn't matter if it looks like a Spike, Square or Round point....

A muted spike would work fine for you. Although the (non-muted) spike tip accounted for most of my cuts when starting out, I really don't think there is too much to fear there, as the spike is great for doing precision work, say right under the nose for instance. One time I was feeling ruckusy, and popped a few hairs out of the inside of my ear with the spike. (yaya, I got ear hair... Guess I'm dating myself a bit here)

Why,yes,I am a happy bunny!!!

One week so far shaving with the Dovo Best Quality while waiting for Larry´s Ontario Cutlery 5/8 to arrive. I know YMMV but I have realised shavette shaving is much harder for me. Only one cut with the Dovo,a few weepers and nicks but they stop bleeding easily and heal pretty soon. In spite of the blood I get really smooth shaves and am getting under my chin stubble "tamed".In fact today I made 3 passes (WTG,XTG and WTG) and am amazed of the results.

Stropping was what held me back from starting. But until Larry´s Poor Man strop kit arrived I went stropping on newspaper. Was a good excercise before jumping to the leather, and you know what? It isn´t that difficult!!!

Any regrets then? yes....should have started shaving with a straight instead of the shavette.

Shaving with a straight is a great feeling when it starts to come together. It only gets better and better every week you stick with it! I'm not a morning person, but I get up extra early every morning just to enjoy my shave.
