Latest restore attempt

A manhattan cutlery 6/8 near wedge with a groove on the front like the razor in brooksie's crumbling edge thread. Managed to get the scales off without destroying them . Did have a little de lamination at the wedge end of one. Interestingly, there is no actual wedge. The scales have a little extra material on the inside at that end that acts as a wedge(see arrow). I've seen this on modern plastic scales and on the Bakelite scales on my Torrey, but not on horn.

I started the the blade cleanup with some white diamond but there's still a lot of crud so I got out the sandpaper. I'm going to see how I can do with 400 and only drop lower if needed.

Any suggestions on what grit to start with for the scales?

here is a pic of the blade profile also

Actually, after I wrote the post and forgot to hit the post button, I took the MAAS to them and except for the spots I glued and a couple small scratches from removing the wedge pin, they look great. I will need to sand the glued spots. Fortunately the worst of it is inside the wedge end, so not visible. I'll start there with 220 and see how it looks before working on the exposed spots. Thanks

What is that spot at the pivot on the upper scale? Is it a creator or just surface scratching? Are you going to do anything with the square pivot hole in the tang? I think I would fill that with epoxy and re drill it.

The light spot at the pivot is a small spot of separation of layers of horn in the middle of the scales's thickness. Even the new horn blanks I have have spots like this. I'll take a closer look at the hole but I've pinned larger holes without any problem. It's had a square hole for about 150 years, why does it need to change now?

Thanks, I have no experience with horn. I find an oversize pivot hole bothersome when stropping, I don't have an issue with it shaving YMMV. It is interesting that it is square, that must have been done hot with a drift.
