Lapping Film - Where to buy & how to use

I hear that I can use lapping film to get by bevel into shape.

A) is this a reasonable alternative to a set of expensive lapping stones ?
B) where Can I buy a basic set of the appropriate films ?
c) where can i get some basic instructions on use ?

thanks,
Allen

Ok.. just bought some of this lapping film.

Can not wait to try it but want to verify a few things:

1) I lap into the edge.. correct ? is this true even with the finers papers ?
2) How many laps per film ? the package includes: 1 micron, 2 micron, 3 micron, 9 micron, 15 micron and 30 microns.

Thanks for the help !

I don't know if he still carries them, but our great member RickBoone1 had a killer deal on them.

I know mostly how due to reading in the straight razor part of the forum and the hones subforum. There's a whole lot of info on there, so read up and if you have any questions, ask the experts there.

Talking about lappping film is like Beetlejuice, within a certain number of posts you should see a "No Mojo" comment :)

I use 12, 5, 3 and 1. I had other grits but found these 4 were the main ones I liked/ used, etc.

12 is used to set your bevel. Search some of Slash McCoy's threads, he had a great tutorial on them.

How many laps just depends on what shape the razor is in.

What you bought seems to be a flimsy paper that will not hold up well.

I had a thread around here somewhere that had a video (not mine) but illustrated pretty good of how to set the paper up. You'll want to put it on something flat. A piece of granite, another hone, a piece of tile, whatever.

Yes, always edge leading/ first. Just like a hone. Yes, it's a great cheaper alternative to hones.

You can set the bevel on the 12, but a 15 would possibly require less strokes. It's just going to be a finer grit. Whereas 12 µm is ~1200 grit, 15 may be 1000 or 800?
