laphroaig quarter cask vs lagavulin 16

ok i want your experiences with each of the scotches nothing else. also this is just my findings on the two. YMMV

ok lagavulin 16 price $130cad 43%abv

nose: medium Smokey and peaty with spice and a wine-ish note.
taste: muted smoke spicy with peat running through it, burnt caramel?
Peat: light medium
smoke: medium
smoothness: smooth!
finish: long and dry
verdict: a good complex islay malt but IMHO doesn't deliver for the price point.

Laphroaig quarter cask. price $66Cad 48% abv

Nose: more peat than smoke but theirs a lot of both light vanilla
taste: peat peat smoke with a spicy sweetness at the end
smoke: heavy
Peat : extra heavy
smothness: medium smooth
finish: extra long with a medium sweet dry
Verdict: for peat heads delivers way over its price range. not as complex though.

so yea whats your experiences with these two malts?

I had both about 3 years ago. Bought both bottles.

Your description are accurate. The Lagavulin 16 is my favourite of the two. Every time I go to the liquor store, I stare at the bottle. I can not buy it again. It is so unbelievably good, that I fear I would drink at least half the bottle in one sitting. I already drink too much.

Nevertheless, you have impeccable taste.

I'd have to agree as well. I think the Lagavulin is more smokey, whereas the Laphroaig is more peaty. Here the Lagavulin only costs ~$85, and remains my favorite single malt. I will, however, keep the Laphroaig on the shelf as the sweet finish is quite nice.

I prefer the Lagavulin. More complex and balanced.

But the Quarter Cask is Laphroaig's best offering, IMHO.

I just got a bottle of lagavulin 16 from Costco for $56 and all I can say is whoa.

It's my first islay and I have mixed feelings. It is very smooth, balanced, and complex. It's so complex and engaging I find myself thinking about all day!

But, that iodine note hits me hard and recalls unpleasant memories of my youth, haha.

I will likely migrate back to speysides but I will be pouring lagavulin for my scotch and soda drinking pals and watch their face, lol.

I pretty much agree with the OP. Another couple to throw into the comparison would be Bowmore 12 and Talisker 10. The Laphroaig is my "house" Scotch, with the Bowmore 12 in the backup role.

i'v tried both and the bowmore is very un interesting to me. its got a weak smoke an peat in comparison. it is slightly spicy though.

and the talisker is great! asides from the slight petrol note its a great strong whisky. smokey lightly peaty spicy and salty.

I really like them both. I would probably describe the lagavulin 16 as more complex. I cant say if I care more for the lagavulin 16 or lagavulin 12, but one of them will always be on my shelf. I am quickly becoming a peat head, so the laphroaig quarter cask is also stocked regularly. I drink more laphroaig. and save the lagavulin for more special occasions.
