What's new

Lady Gillette thoughts...

I got my wife a lady gillette for Christmas and finally had a chance to snatch and give it a try. I put a new derby in and lathered up, and it was awesome!

I can say it is quite different than my HD, it seems to not be as agressive but still gets nice and close. I will be using it again for a few days while I find out some info before I purchase.

What's the equivalent of the lady gillette? Is there a specific gillette that has the long handle? I would love one, preferably without the stars on it...:001_smile

Would a red tip be about the same? Or a SS from a certain year range?

Thanks a lot, you are assisting my AD.

The superspeeds are identical except for the handles adn they are short handled. I dont know of a gillette that has a long handle but if there is one I am sure another B&Ber will be more than happy to let you know.

Thanks, is there a year range for the SS that I should look for?

I also learned the Red tip is more aggressive, is the blue tip the less aggressive one?

Thanks

Been in the reviews, looks like basically any SS would be close, I need to get shopping!

The 50's style SuperSpeed will have a similar style head. The Slim Adjustable and the Super Adjustable have long handles and can approximate the Lady Gillette shave.

From what I have, I think the Lady is less aggressive than the 60's flare tip SS, more aggressive than the blue tip SS, and on par to perhaps a bit more aggressive than the undated but notched SS.

Your mileage might very well vary though.

You are correct. Red tip is most aggressive. Blue tip is least aggressive. Regular SS is somewhere in the middle.

As far as I know, the only longer handled razors Gillette made were the Slim and the Big Fellow. The Big Fellow is an older razor and I think they are typically on the more expensive side. They also have an open comb head, so probably not what you're looking for. The Slim is adjustable, so again, probably not what you want.

If you're looking for a razor that is close the Ladies Gillette, people typically say the standard SuperSpeed has an identical head. In my experience (I've got a 50s SS and a 40s SS as well as two Lady's Gillette), the Ladies Gillette have slightly thinner heads than the SS. It's not much, but enough that I can visually detect a difference. That said, they shave very similarly.

The 'Lady Gillette' head is the same as the Superspeed of the era. These are the low profile SS from 1960 until the introduction of the Black handled Superspeed. They're a gentle razor that gives a good shave.

The long handled variant of these Superspeeds are the 'Knack' from '67~'72 --it has a 4" blue plastic handle. The version you'd want for equivalence is the '67 (M code), though the later years of Knack are just as good. There was a slight change to the head in '68 that paralleled the production of the Black Handled Superspeed.

The equivalent is an Gillette Slim or Super Adjustable set to about '4'.

What he said.

Long handle Gillettes are the black beauty and the knack, the lady gillette is an excellent razor for men because the head was not changed for shaving legs, etc., but was kept the same as the male models

the black beauty at 4 inches is one of my favorites
the knack was made in usa and england, I like the tto and weight distribution of the english model, but to each his own

I tried to shave whit a Lady Gillette one day, and i stopped after 2 stroke, was feeling like sand paper on my face.
Must be a good razor for people whit light beard.

Yes, the Red Tip is more aggressive than the flaretip or black-handle superspeed (which are pretty much the same). The Blue Tip is less aggressive.

I just got my brother-in-law a black-handle superspeed for christmas and tried shaving with it and a Derby blade. Wonderful, gentle, close, smooth shave. I also love using my Red Tip. You can't go wrong with a superspeed.

I've been using a long-handle super adjustable for the past couple of weeks. Excellent razor, especially if you're looking for a longer handle like the lady gillette has.

Try a Feather blade in the Lady Gillette! I use my wifes on occasion...great shaver when used with the Feather!

I ended up going with a 1957 SS. Got it from Gillette4259, great to deal with by the way, and was very happy. I have only used it with a feather so far and it feels so nice. Hard to describe how different it is than my HD, I am very happy with the purchase and like the TTO.

Thanks for the help!
