Keeping Brush Warm?

I'm not sure if this should go into the Brush section or Soap or General hah.

Anyway I face lather and really like doing it that way but I was wondering if there was a way to keep my brush warmer between passes? I know bowl guys sometime keep the bowl in warm water and then there are scuttles. Is there any benefit to keep the brush & lather on it warm or should I just not think about it?

I usually just stand the brush up on the side of the sink while I shave, could buying a scuttle or some sort of similar item make for a more enjoyable shave? Does warm lather work any different than cold lather?

I don't think about it. I just stand mine or rest it on the soap puck between passes. For me, scuttles aren't worth the effort. Just something else to clean up and find a place to store. My regular scuttle has been buried somewhere in the basement for the past 2 years. Dirty Bird does have a nice looking "brush scuttle" for face latherers if you decide to go that route. I never tried one of those.

I on the other hand say go for a scuttle. It does exactly what you are looking for.
Just make sure you get one that will hold enough hot water.
Fill the scuttle before you shower (assuming you shave after you shower) in both the inside and bowl.
Pop the brush in and jump in the shower.
Dump out the water and re fill the inside with hot water.
Make up your lather and enjoy.

I normally bowl lather and place the bowl in the sink with hot tap water. That keeps the lather very warm and occasionally causes a mild lather break down. Today I used a Palmolive stick and face lathered resting the brush in the bowl and the bowl in the sink. The brush stayed warm. However the heat did not easliy penetrate to the interior of he brush and the warmth quickly dissipated as I began to face lather for passes 2,3 and 4. The brush started warm for each pass. The bowl is a repurposed heavy ceramic soup bowl and retains/transmits heat from the water quite well into a prepared lather and a brush loaded with lather. I'd suggest a few experimental runs with a 'borrowed' soup or cereal bowl from the kitchen. You will get a good idea of what benefit a bowl or scuttle would provide without making an investment that might disappoint. As to the perfomance of warm v cold lather, warm feels better even if it doesn't provide any other benfit. Feeling better during and after a shave is the whole purpose of our elaborate rituals aside from wet shaving's alledged economic benefits. Speaking of which I will have fully amortized my investment sometime just before my 90th birthday. I'm looking forward to that.

When I want a warm lather I use one of her 1.5 scuttles for bowl lathering. When I face lather like I did today, I forego the scuttle.

i love the feel of a warm, soft brush against my face. Don't think I could go back to a colder one.

Buy an $8 dollar gravy warmer at World Market. It is a little too deep to use as a lathering scuttle, but is fantastic as a brush warmer. I use mine pretty much every shave.

I just add a few drops of hot water to the brush for the second pass. Works well enough for me.

This thread piqued my interest so I dug out my old G5 scuttle, nuked some water in it, and let the brush rest inside between (face lathering) passes. Was the lather warmer? Yes. Will I bother using it again? No. Still not worth the effort.

Thanks for all the help guys!!

To answer a couple questions I do shave after my shower each night and before I shower I always put my brush in a mug of warm water to soak while I shower.

The Dirty Bird face lather scuttle looks very pretty. With it's 3.25" deep cup tapering to 1" that seems a bit snug to put my brushes bristles into?

Thanks Ollie4ISU & turtle for the gravy warmer info. I remember reading turtles review of it a while back. I wanted to get one but its in store only and there isn't one in my state.

I really liked the idea of the warming mug though so I did some looking and found this one online for $1.99 I'll see how it works and toss up a small review when I get it next week.
I'm hoping it will be the perfect fit for my Duke 2 Best which is also coming in next week :)

The warm lather just feels better IMHO. What I do is when I'm ready for the next pass is to quickly pass the brush through running hot tap water. I run it through right where the bristles are glued into the handle. This allows hot water to get into the brush, but it won't be too runny to where it washes out the lather. A really quick pass through the hot water is all that needed.

Well I got in my $1.99 Warming Pitcher & my new Duke 2 Brush today.

The Warming Pitcher is a wee bit larger than I thought it was going to be for only $1.99 lol. It looks decently made and about the same quality as a standard coffee mug.

My Duke 2 looks very small inside of the pitcher vs my old coffee mug, I'll have to give it a go tonight and see how well it works!
