Kami Question

Are there different types, styles, etc. of kamis, other than by maker? Like different grinds, points, etc. in western straights? thanks.

I have not seen different grinds in traditional Kamisori razors. However, they vary a bit in length and width (thus weight) and the nose may be a bit different depending on who made it. Generally, they are similar. But I'm an idiot so don't trust me.

As I understand it, there are three basic sizes (I think), and there are also left-hand models. There are variou$ type$ of $teel, too. I don't know much beyond that.

There are different styles but they are all pretty much the same. I have a kami with almost no "hollow grind" on either side. I have one that the hollow side is very hollow. There are different sizes from 45mm to 60mm or more shaving length. And anywhere from a 5/8" to 8/8". My personal opinion with kamisori's is the smaller the better (you can get better angles). But the big ones shave just as well. Some are conpletely straight. Some are kind of "bent" looking (intentionally of course". Pretty much all have points. But depending on the maker and who honed it, or if you request the points are extremely pointy, kind of pointy, or dulled. There are also many steels from sheffield steel, to tamagagene (spelling is wrong here, very very hard and expensive). Generally the harder the steel the better for kamisori's

hope this helps. Let me know if you have more question!

Thanks for the quick response. I assumed the nose differences were the result of users trying avoid that nasty point.

IMO, frankly, if you can invent a vibrating Kami, let alone a safety razor with a night light, you're likely at least trust-worthy.

This is great, thank you! Unfortunately, you may have just opened up another AD rabbit hole for me. Any recommendations on where to look for kamis? They don't seem to come up on BST too often. I did pick up one, which I have enjoyed using greatly. Thanks again.

eBay is a good place to look. They go fast though. Make sure you can see both sides of the razor so you can see the hone wear. It should be as even as possible, but will rarely be perfect. Aframestokyo is a good place to get new razors. And posting a wanted ad is a good thing to do too as in my experience many people have them but don't put them for sale as they don't know what it is worth.

Very cool. Here I thought I might avoid an Kami AD bonanza, but true to form, there are B&B enablers at every corner.
