What's new

Just scored this on the Bay.

Just won this razor on the BAy, not sure which Gillette it is. Any help? Looks like a nice open comb and will clean it up and try it as soon as it arrives.

I switched from shaving with an electric razor to DE safety razor wet shaving in the middle of August. I bought a Merkur 180 to get me started. Then just a few days ago, my mother gave me an old Gillette razor she said her father had on display in his house for quite a while. My grandfather and his wife have lots of antiques and have random old stuff in every room of the house. Anyway, he moved, and gave a bunch of stuff to my mom to either keep or trash. The Gillette was a part of the stash. It looks the same as the one pictured above, and I would love to know more information about it. Is there a site that catalogs old razors, like a wiki or something? "Ball end old type Gillette razor" just doesn't mean anything to me. I'm including three photos, and thanks in advance for any info!

Mr. Razor's site has more info (google it). I do see that you need a new handle, though Muero. Your handle is cracked and that is why the ball and screw end came off of the handle. There are several people on here that can make you a new handle for that razor head.

Thanks for the info. Is there a way to tell whether it's a Shawmut set, an Old Type set, or a Copley set? Or is there no difference other than the box? I can't see any differences in those photos.

Yes, the handle is cracked, but it doesn't affect using it. I put a new blade in it (a Gillette, just to match the brand) and shaved with it once. Its looks may have worn, but it still performs like new. In case I do want a new handle someday, where to I find someone who can make one? I did try searching, but didn't find anything relevant.

Curious too. From that site its hard to tell which one it is unless the only difference is the case it comes in. How did it shave? Can't wait for mine to get here so I can try it out.

It's the latter. The names refer to the sets and it's really the case that defines the set. The razors were the same.

Wasn't it also known as a Brownie, and sold without a case?

The Brownie was cased (see below), but they did also package ball-end Old Types without cases in cardboard boxes, like the Genuine Gillette.
