What's new

Just ordered ogallala.

Pretty much a blind buy. I love bay rum, although, I've only tried pinaud and captains choice, Im hoping the ogallala is similar to those and not like masters. I love clovey cinnamon!!! Btw, I bought the 8oz AS and 4oz cologne package.

Of the Bay Rims I have tried Ogallala is my favorite. Hope you like it - post and let us know what you think.

I bought the soap sampler, which came with a sample of as. I ended up bying the as again after it ran out. It is interesting that the larger size as has more burn than the sample did.

Interested in ogallala. I haven't tried it yet. I am a fan of the sweeter bay rums. I do like masters, but lately I have used Sauvecito exclusively.

I've been using bay rum w/peppercorn and lime for a few years now. I like it, haven't found one I like better(yet) and John the owner is a great guy to do business with. Always one of his products being used, whether splash, wash or shave. Nice to meet all of you. Nice place here.

I love the Ogallala, I also love the Captain's Choice. Ogallala is a sweeter bay rum, very clovey at the top notes, then fades off to a mellow bay rum, but without the powdery scent I got from Master's when I sampled it (I didn't like the Master's over all compared to Ogallala and Captain's Choice). From what you've said, the Ogallala should be right up your alley. :) Enjoy.

I love the Ogallala, I also love the Captain's Choice.

+1. I also have 8oz bottles of Ogallala BR, Limes & Peppercorn and BR, Sage & Cedar. And I'm looking forward to the new Captain's Choice with extra burn. Ogallala and Captains Choice seem to be the only aftershaves that I reach for anymore. I also didn't like Masters.

Don't forget to shake the Ogallala before using.

I believe the Captain's Choice has no cloves at all. Cinnamon? Probably. A great aftershave.
Krampert's is clovey; it's also an amazingly good product, and inexpensive, relatively. Probably the plastic bottle has something to do with that, though.
And thanks to a forum brother, I got a sample of Gilbert Henry and really liked that, too. It's a long step toward a balm, relative to the others.

Ogallala smells very reminiscent of clove/kretek cigarettes. Terrible.

It has a strong clove hit in the bottle, and upon first hitting the skin, but that part really fades and mellows fast. I don't like clove in general, but it dissipates into something different fast enough I'm liking it a lot myself. Course, the above statement was from someone who loves The Veg, so obviously their sense of smell is skewed... :biggrin1:

I expect you to be happy with your purchase. I am certainly no scent expert but I like what I like, and out of all AS products I've ever tried, the Bay Rum scent is my favorite. (Full disclosure: I'm 59 in a couple weeks and I've been shaving since I was 13. I've tried almost all the common aftershaves over the past 46 years as well as a few "higher end" ***. I've never been a cologne kind of guy.)
I have the following:

  • Captains's Choice
  • Ogallala - AS, Cologne, Cedar, Sandalwood, Limes & Peppercorns (While I like the Cedar, Limes & Peppercorns, and Sandalwood [in that order], I prefer the plain version most for scent.)
  • Krampfert's
  • C.O. Bigelow 1401 AS Balm
  • Master's (picked it up yesterday, so I haven't tried it yet.)

In terms of smell, I rate them Ogallala, CC, Krampfert's as 1,2,3 with Ogallala and CC being very close in scent. The 1401, although a very nice scent, has little in common with the first three. Master's, smelling from the bottle, doesn't appear to have much in common with the first three either, but I cannot say that with any confidence until I actually try it on the skin.

Next up to purchase: Gilbert Henry. I just found out about this today, literally minutes before opening up this thread. I'll probably order the 1 ounce sampler yet today. From various comments it sounds like it may be a good mix of (what I believe to be) traditional Bay Rum scent and soothing balm properties.

As far as the Cologne, I occasionally put it on the back of my neck after the AS, but I don't find the scent lasts any longer than the BR AS so I rarely use it.

So, questions for those who like/use the Ogallala cologne: How do you use it?

Do you splash it on your face like AS? If so, instead of or on top of the AS?
Do you use it like other colognes; chest, behind the ears, where ever?
Do you find the scent as short-lived as I do?
Is the "double-strength" better?

Edit: I haven't been much of a cologne user the past 40 years so I don't know what to expect of one.

I splash it on after using the AS, sort of to top it off. I just pour a tablespoon or such into the hand, rub them together a little bit, and apply it pretty much... well... everywhere I have skin, almost. Face, neck, shoulders, chest... I pretty much dry my hands off on the rest of the skin with it.

It does mellow faster than many/most other colognes I have. I'm not sure if the double strength is better, I plan on picking up the small bottle soon to try it.

The captains choice doesn't really last a long time either, compared to other scents I have worn, so it's about the same there.

I've recently started using it and I like it a lot. Be sure you shake it up before use, and be ready for the burn. The finish it leaves on your face is very nice, though. My wife preferrs the bay rum with lime and peppercorn scent, so that is what I ordered for my follow up. And there are always freebies in the box when you get it.

Oh, yeah, get the cologne "sample" for a dollar while you are ordering. 2 oz. bottle of cologne for a buck. How can you go wrong?

I have the Ogallala Sweet Orange and Bay Rum soap and I love the scent. If this is anything like that, I'm sure it would be wonderful.

I've got the sample bottle of the original Ogallalla, I want to buy some more but for some reason there's never any on e bay anymore. I've got a little left in the bottle but I'm scared to use in case I can't get anymore.
