What's new

Just got this Tissot for my dad. Opinions?

I was checking out Tissots on eBay when I came across this one that happened to be made the year my father was born.

So I put in my max snipe bid, and it happened to be just enough to win the auction. (One bid higher, I would have been out.)

I'm going to give it to my dad on his birthday.

Any of you who know about watches give some insight? How does the movement look to you?

Was it a fair price?

Assuming it works as well as the seller claims ... :whistling: ... and given the condition, I'd be willing to pay that much ... but then again I know nothing about the old watch market. Maybe we're both suckers. :surrender:

I think it's a thoughtful gift; it looks great, and for a price you were willing to pay.

When I bought a watch off eBay I had it cleaned and inspected just to be sure. A quick check you could do is to measure how many minutes it loses over the course of a day, compared to a timepiece you know to be accurate.

Enjoy!

An interesting movement, I had not seen an automatic like that before. Didn't know there were automatics with lower jewel counts. Dial looks to be in great shape for the age.

Can't comment on the price for Tissots, but I probably would've paid the same without too much agonizing.

Bumper automatics are a cool retro thing. I don't think anyone is making them anymore. They were really popular with Omega (Tissot and Omega merged in the 30's, this is the same movement used in some Omega's).

Jewel count, schmewel count. There is no 'standard' for automatics. :glare:

The size and movement look correct for that time period. The mechanicals are in good shape. Corrosion is usually a problem with watches that age. As far as price, you are essentially getting an Omega for a song. Nice catch.

I did not know that Tissot and Omega were the same company, that's a good bit of education for me. And the movements look pretty much identical other than it looks as though omega used a bit more stainless or plated metal in the movement.

Oh and it is a nice looking watch BTW, I am sure that your Dad will appreciate it!

So, I gave it to him a little before his birthday, and yep, it was a hit.

He pulled out a modern Tissot Seastar Seven that he had, but said he didn't have any vintage ones, and loved that it was made in his birth year.
