Just for Men doesn't really work

Hi, I tried using Just for Men recently to cover up my increasing gray hair, it just washed right out. I don't really get it. I'm new to this whole hair care, hair loss/graying industry, but I would think a highly recognizable product like this is supposed to just work? I followed the instructions explicitly, applied the product, timed it, rinsed out in shower. The second time I left it on longer. It all just rinsed right out, as if I had never used it. Totally worthless.

The usage seems pretty straightforward, am I doing anything wrong? Is there a better product out there? Thanks for any input.

When I was just starting to go gray I used it on my goatee and it worked very well. Pretty soon you'll end up losing the fight anyway. I say let nature take its course or get a professional to do it up right.

Thanks you're probably right. Thing is I'm only 40, and a year ago it didn't seem bad. For some reason it's really going gray now pretty fast, freaks me out a bit.

Now half as wise
Embrace it! Started going gray in my mid 30's. By 45 had more gray hair than my father. Many times it was assumed I was older and more experienced than I was. Was taken more seriously many times than I might otherwise have been.

I started getting gray patches when I was ~25. 33 now and it's very very noticeable on the sides and some on top. By 40 I'll be solid gray like my father before me. My wife says it looks handsome and distinguished (FWIW). The thought has crossed my mind to try the dye jobs, but I just know I would have felt really silly fighting a losing battle instead of just accepting it. On the bright side I still have a lot of hair; where my friends seem to be all losing theirs.

This is true. I have had a Non-gray mop my entire adult life. Now that I'm in my 50s my hair is FINALLY starting to turn. I'm readying to retire and NOW people are turning to me for answers? :mad2:

I have mixed feelings about coloring. I started going gray at 23. For a time, at he behest of a SWMBO, I had my hair colored. But unless you keep it up very constantly, you're not fooling anybody. After about three weeks, there is enough gray showing to indicate "oh, he dyes his hair."

I do think there are some colorists/stylists that are adept at doing a "blending" which doesn't try to hide all the gray, but minimize it a bit. But this will get pricey too.

The intent of Just for Men is do that same thing, but it's a more intense process than their commercials would have you believe.

You'll be standing over a sink for several minutes, applying, rinsing and rerinsing, etc. Their commercial makes it look near instant. It is not. I also think for most guys a professional job will look way better than the results from Just for Men. Color me a pessimist, but I'll bet most guys who use it don't end up anything like the suave guy pictured on the box.

Being well groomed and well shaved- we got that covered.

Coloring our own hair- hire a pro.

I tried coloring but it made me look a bit like Elvis, not in a good way. I think maybe my coworkers were making fun of me as well. I decided to just let nature take its course. Whenever I see photos of me from a decade ago before I started going gray, I get a little sad. I find however, that some hair care products that used to work don't work so well anymore - they make my hair shiny and it only seems to exacerbate the gray. One product that I like is Crew Fibre paste (sort of like a pomade), which leaves a matte finish and seems to make the gray a bit less noticeable.

When my dad started turning grey he had a great answer to all the usual comments. "They're mine. I earned every one of them. A few of these are yours because you put them there. They show experience and dedication. Best of all, they are still attached!" He delivered this with a smile and a laugh.

I find this works for me too. Embrace your expanding experience and all that comes with it. Some doors start to close as we gain time but others open.

I did have an interviewer comment on the subject once in a very "legal" manner. I just said "I'll never be too old to learn something new and I will never apologize for my experience". I will finish nine years in this new career in July.

Professional coloring didn't even work for me. Some types of hair just doesn't take to it well, I think.

Finding the right colorist takes time.

Several suggestions.

1. Make sure the colorist lets the chemicals stay on your hair at least 30 minutes.

2. Do not shampoo your hair for at least 2 days.

3. Use color protected shampoo, conditioner and hair products.

Just saw this thread and I'll tell you what I've found over the past 5 or 6 years. Firstly, I don't want grey hair so i do something about it. If you don't want it then sort it out, don't just embrace as people seem to suggest, unless it really doesn't bother you at all.

So...Just For Men, forget it. It is rubbish. I have dark brown hair and if you leave it for 5 mins then it won't even dye your hair. So I began to experiment. I used to leave it on for longer. Eventually it will dye your hair but not the colour you were hoping for. It's a fine line, not long enough = no results, a bit too long = obviously dyed, mine had a hint of red about it.

Trevor Sorbie Mg mens hair colour....is very good but has been taken off the shelves over the past year due to some formulation problem. You can normally buy it in Boots.

L'Oreal Excel 5 Men's hair colour....I use this just now. It's pretty good and still cheap. The only problem i have with it is that it doesn't last very long. It says up to 28 washes and that's being very generous. Between 2-3 weeks I'd say before it obviously needs done again. It seems to struggle with the roots. But the colour is good enough. Again, I don't leave it for the recommended 5 mins otherwise I've just wasted my time.

Min New York....this is the best, by far. I live in the UK and can't get it here anymore but when I did use it, it was very good. It lasts longer than L'Oreal and the colour is good. If you're in the states, just use this, problem solved! It's more expensive than the budget ones but it's worth it.

Other problems...application. Not easy. Especially at the back. L'oreal comes with a nice comb which makes it quicker. Then the timing...this is the trial and error part. I'd recommend trying the 5 mins first, it does vary with colour and hair type. But be prepared to try longer nexttime untily ou find the optimal time for you. Application can take up to 5 mins when i do it, then i wait for at least another 10 mins, ofte a bit more.

Grey hair is tough to color. If you over do it you will get an unnatural look as well (too uniform). I just put it in (I use one shade less than my natural color...one shade lighter..in my case that would be medium brown) and I don't worry about getting it perfect. I don't leave it in too long either.

That way I still have grey hair but over all my hair looks darker than being solid grey. People don't notice that you are coloring your hair this way. Particularly if you do it right after a hair cut. They just notice the hair cut.

I have short hair so I was only using a fraction of the bottle and you have to throw the rest away. I started buying the two tubes for mustaches and sideburns. I can use these for several times.

Put it on your sideburns first as that's the hardest to dye and then put it on the rest of your hair.

It works for me and looks more natural than any other way. One shade lighter blends in better and doesn't look odd at the roots as your hair grows.

Once every few years I find myself at a drugstore pondering the Just For Men and other similar products. It typically takes me 30 seconds to a minute before I snap out of it and think "I'm a guy. What in hell am I doing looking at this stuff!"

YMMV

BTW I don't have gray hair. I have some unpigmented hair.
