What's new

Just bought this scuttle, what do you think?

I saw this deal on the classifieds (at SRP) and just couldnt pass it up. I had the amazon.com dip chiller but i have a few issues with that one. Anyways im stoked about it, the lip on the end looks big enough that i can rest my shavemac in it.

I was curious if anyone else had one of these, or something similar. Sometimes when i have the time i will boil water in a kettle and use it to keep my lather warm. Im just worried that it could cause problems and make the scuttle crack or something. Never really used one before so im not sure how much i should fill it up.

Also, ive been wanting something black to make lather in because i think it will give me a better perspective as to how thick or watery my lather is as im mixing it

I've had one since December and I use it every day. In the beginning I put boiling water in it, but it's not necessary. I fill it with hot tap water before I go into the shower and then replace it more hot water before I start to shave. I think the warm lather also helps soften my beard. I'm sure you'll love it.

The spout looks like it would be big enough to rest your brush in. You ever try?

Great Buy. Don seems to sell his personal shaving stuff on SRP and its all TOP notch gear and I've missed buying every single item. I have the Moss, the GT3 and your scuttle. The one you just bought works the best. Look up the Schwarzweisskeramik website and you can see the selection of scuttles and also how to make soap lather in it. Again great buy!

The maker says the spout is a water reservoir . His idea is if you don't have to be chained to a sink for your source of water , the scuttle reservoir supplies it. I think he imagines this frees you up to shave at the window if you want.

That thing is sweet by my standards; I want one.

I would imagine that it'll take a little experimentation to get the right water level, degrees, etc. There seems to be very little surface contact with the main bowl (as opposed to the other blue scuttle), so a lot of the heat exchange should come through the material (porcelain?) itself. Starting out with water in the heat compartment just below the scuttle compartment should give an idea where to go from there - too cold, add water. As for the brush - badger? How much heat can badger take??? The hair should take the brunt of it. I've used a makeshift version of this in the past on cold days - a small bowl in a large bowl, bath - like a double boiler; but I didn't have a fancy brush back then; the hot foam felt great. I'd start out leaning/resting it away from the heat compartment, or use a brush that won't leave you shouting DOH!

If I can't find me one of those when I'm in the market I'll have to have one made, in fact I may see if I can get a friend to whip one up for me.

Please tell us how it works out.

Sometimes the tweezerman. Its going to be interesting seeing how this performs. Like i said before, i been using the dip chiller from amazon.com and im a bit disappointed in its performance. It keeps my lather warm, but the inner bowl doesnt sit flush with the outer bowl. It clanks around when you start swirling the brush. I only paid 13 bucks for it so no big deal really.

I think having something black to make lather in will be great to see how well the lather is developing.

The spout is where you add the water, which goes down into the double wall under the bowl through a hole. It's filled with water so I don't rest my brush in it.

As for being unchained from the sink, I've actually used that feature. I have a barber chair in the living room where I will occasionally give a friend a shave. Having the water reservoir means that I can lather the victim up without being near a sink.
