What's new

just bought 2 Semogues!

bought an 830 and 1305 after much praise here...

wow what a difference a brush can make, i got a great lather and subsequently a great shave this morning with my 1305, look forward to trying the 830, i will put them into an every other day rotation...

the low end vulfix boar i bought is good, just not great in comparison...

I just shaved for the second time today with my new 1305, love it, and from what I have read here it will be even better after about 20 shaves when broken in!

Damn! All this love for Semgues lately...SBAD has such a grip on me. TLOTH keeps walking past me on the sofa seeing page after page of brushes, she rolls her eyes and keeps walking.

They both have the same knot, the only difference being the handle. They are both excellent brushes.

In my opinion, one pair to get is 830 and 620. Semogue 830, once broken in, is an outstanding cream/soft soap brush and Semogue 620 is ideal for soaps in general. They are both great face lathering brushes due to perfect knot/loft size and backbone.
If you like the warmth of wood, 1305 is amazing, and if you can, get yourself a SOC boar. It does take a bit longer to break in, but worth it.
My favourite boar brush is Semogue 1305.

IMHO... Semogue brushes are the best value shaving brushes on the planet. You don't have to spend a lot of $$$ to own a Semogue. It makes soaps and creams into creamy yogurt. I know because I own a 620 and a SOC.

Of all my Semogues the 1305 is still my favorite, very closely followed by the 1250. I do prefer the oak handle of the 1250; not being painted, it's a little grippier, and the wood itself is beautiful.

It's funny Mel, I've been thinking about a SOC 2-band...AND a 620 for the price (and change) of the Shavemac 167 in 2-band.

My concern is only the loft of the SOC as I tend to like 'em shorter and stiffer. Is the handle TOO big on the SOC?

i did buy them knowing the knots were the same, so I can rotate them, and I couldn't decide which handle I liked better! They are both nice looking design-wise...I will have to grab the 620 next time around, and will look at an SOC in the future.

A slight correction, Leon at Vintage Scent has often said that the 830 is the same know with 10% more bristle added. It is a slightly denser brush.

We are in agreement that they are both excellent brushes.

To Scott and the other owners of new Semogue brushes, you're in for a treat over the coming weeks.

They're not the same knot!

From somewhere else where Leon describes the grades of hair they use

"The Premium grade appears in the iconic 1305. Following the success of the 1305, some asked me if it was possible to have the same knot, but in a acrylic handle, so the 830 was born. This grade usually has a dyed band, but it appears undyed in the 2000 mixed with other grade hair."

Regardless, they are exceptional brushes at exceptional value.

Scott, I also bought 820 and 1305 knowing they have the same knot. In reality, I found that there are some differences between the two and I expect this is due to the fact these brushed are handmade. I am curious if you will find the same slight difference, after the break in period.
Enjoy yours!

I have to stop now....started with a 620, which is my favorite so far. Followed up with the 1305, breaking in, also very nice. Finally, I must stop after receiving my SOC. it's quite large and already, at two uses, provides enough for 4 passes.

Im a gonna stop now....

Do the faux badger knots perform and feel differently that the pure white boar? I chose mine because I wanted boar to look like boar and not like faux badger. Thoughts?

I have and use 830, 620, 1305 and SOC. The dyed boars were broken-in and ready for use in less than six days of test lather (palm). My SOC has at least 30 shaves and is still not fully broken. I cannot tell you about other boar brushes since I have no experience.
The dyed boar brushes I use have soft tips (830 being the softest) and SOC is the most scratchy of all. SOC holds a lot of water, so when using with cream I have to squeeze more water out.
SOC will hold enough lather for four passes since it has the largest knot and highest loft. It also splays the most. These last treats have nothing to do with it being a natural blond, just due to knot/loft size, I think.
