What's new

Just another new guy

Being new to wet shaving I've been blessed with all sorts of RAD,,BAD etc.
( cursed?)
While haunting flea markets and antique shops for DE items, I couldn't help but stumble upon str8's and couldn't pass them by. In the back of my mind I knew the inevitable.
Due to the nature of my work I have a collection of stones and strops. So I had a go at sharpening my finds ( only about 9 razors so far) picked a couple of likely candidates and off I went.
I now have picked up stones dedicated to my razors as well as new leather to make a 4 sided strop, 3 5 15 micron film to try, in addition to the stuff I've already scored while "antiquing"
I've got only 5 shaves under my belt . But I'm very happy with the results. Two minor cuts so far ( less than I had with DE's!) due to my underestimating the length of the blade while watching the immediate cutting area and my ear got in the way. The other while trying to navigate the endless radius's around my chin.
Initially the length of the blade and learning the angles and directions to approach different areas I was a bit awkward in my handling of the blade. Such as,," How do I get this big blade to get under my nose and clean up my upper lip?" As my comfort levels as well as motor skills increase I expect these questions to keep falling away one by one.
The chin area though , compared to the flat areas, I'm getting it done, but not as gracefully as I imagine it can be done.
I'll get there.

Good job. I like your 4 sided strop combination with film.

Like every motor skill I learned, to get the best control I had to release tension.
I'm sure it will only get better with use, especially since you have the means to hone your razors.

I find that about ten passes on 1 micron and than 0.3 micron every 4 or 5 shaves are all I need to get the razors to comfortable ATG capability.

Great report!

I wasn't nearly as foresighted as you were, and passed up a number of nice straights when i was out looking for DE's, only to come back to those shops and find them gone.

if you've got a good edge, you're shaves will get smoother. like you said it's inevitable.
