Joseph Rogers and Sons, First restore

Hello all; Ive cleaned up a few razors but not a full on restore till now. Ebay find, Joseph Rogers and sons, Cutlers to their Majesties.

Cleaned up the blade as best as possible with sandpaper up to 1k then a bit on the buffer. That seems to preserve the defining lines a little better without looking too "melted"

Still a few spots on the blade but nothing too serious

Faux tortoise scales, brass pins and washers, honed it yesterday for a shave, very nice.....Feels good to have it back in service

I like it... I struggled a bit with one I did, in thinking a restoration needs to be done. But in "over restoring" it to something it never was, is really a modification. So in removing as much pitting as possible, and keeping as much of the old machine/grinding marks as possible, is a good thing for a restore. A mirror finish and polish is great as well, but I would say personally more than what the original maker had done.

You did a fantastic job. Well done!

Thanks guys, Im also learning that my photo skills need to improve....

I struggled a bit myself with worrying about over restoring. I do like the fact that a polished finish is a little less prone to develop rust and for a razor to be used thats a plus.

Really a guy has to decide for them self on a case by case basis.

One example that caught my eye was a Wade and butcher Frameback Im working on at the moment.

Poor old thing pretty much had the frameback honed off of of it.

Anyway, Making a new brass back, so far so good...

In the process of removing the back there was a "pristine" area that had the original finish, so I assume that at least the tang had a mirror polish at one time. I know every razor wasnt made like that but at least some were.

This razor will not receive much of a polish at all when finished even though it had one at some time in the past. It has a very faint etch that I do not want to loose and that wins out over any other reasons to polish.

Got a couple more pics in some better light,

One of the wedge, I ended up sawing off a piece of a screwdriver handle  You know those yellow translucent plastic handles, it actually blended perfectly with some of the lighter areas of the faux tortoise
