What's new

Josef Statkus

Wore this for the first time today. Anyone else have any thoughts on this one? I like it on first wear: opens with a rich warm incense that's headed towards amber. The dry down seemed very familiar - it reminds me of Chanel Coromanel.

I'm not familiar with this one, but now I'm interested. I tried Coromandel this week, and liked it quite a bit. I read of Coromandel as being compared to Serge Lutens Borneo 1834. I found Coromandel to be quite a bit gentler than Borneo 1834, sort of like taking the SL and taming it down to enable wearing it to work and other places where the SL is just too bold.

Yes, I've tried the Josef Statkus. On me it tends more toward amber than incense and for some reason doesn't successfully accomplish either as well as other fragrances. In other words, if I wanted an amber, I wouldn't choose JS and if I wanted an incense I still wouldn't choose JS. For a middle ground amber/incense it's not bad, a tad sweet if you ask me, but a good middle ground. I don't think it smells much like Coromandel, personally. Coromandel on me is mint and patchouli, none of which comes out in JS, but who knows?

I'd never confuse Coromandel and JS. And if you were looking for an Avignon like take on pure incense or a deep rich amber (don't have a personal amber reference point yet) JS will disappoint because it walks somewhere in between. But on first wearing I liked the rich, resiny vibe nonetheless. Will have to wear it a few more times before I decide if the no mans land it treads is FBW.

With regards to similarity in the drydown, something in JS recalled Coromandel for me. When I looked at their pyramids they do share a lot of basenotes. I've only worn Coromandel a couple times, need to wear it again and see if it similarly evokes JS.

I like it quite a lot. In fact, I think it is just exactly what a niche fragrance should be. Striking and unusual without being weird or unwearable. The camaphorous incense, jasmine and musk make for a velvety smooth, dense frag that's fantastic on a cool, crisp day.

I have only worn it once so far, I liked it, it had a nice pronounced incense note and was warm but I agree with chandos. it's a very nice scent but if I want incense i'm going to go with avignon. and for a sweet insence eau des baux is much cheaper. I'll definitely wear the whole decant and enjoy it but I doubt I'll buy more...
