What's new

Johnnie Walker Platinum?

I saw it on base the other day and am intrigued. May have to break down and give it a try...

If you try it, be sure to let us know.

Yes. I have a bottle I picked up a few months ago at the Duty Free. I like the old Gold better. Still a good blend though.

I thought it was supposed to be something to replace the Green at the Green's price point. The JW website in tasting notes says "It is an elegant, contemporary example of the Speyside style, finished with a hint of Islay smokiness." That seems like a good flavor profile to aspire to. I assume somewhat sweet and elegant, with complexity, but with some smoke, but sans iodine. Perhaps a gutsier Highland. Or a more elegant Islay.

A blend of malt and grain whiskies each aged a minimum of 18 years. I am disappointed it is not a pure malt, but a minumum age of 18 years is pretty impressive. Seems like the gold has dropped off the JW website's listing of JW "expressions," as well as the Green. The gold was also minimum 18 years of age, too, as I recall. The green minimum 15.

I heard that they have phased out Green and the Original Gold. The "new" gold isnt like the old stuff and will leave you surely disappointed. The Platinum was put in its place. On anothr note, im kinda liking that double black

I never much liked the gold, although I understand why many folks who have great palettes (sp?) did, or do. To me it is/was distinctly creamy, and thus not what I look for in a Scotch. Not that creamy is a flaw, this is just my taste.

I need to try to the double black. I bet I will like it. To me the regular JW black is a wonder. I think it is amazingly good Scotch at a fair price, and absolutely consistent decade after decade. It has got to reflect skilled Scotch-making/blending.

But, of course, YMMV!
