What's new

JA Henkels straight razor question.

What would be a good price for a JA Henkels straight razor, never been used, never been sharpened? Local antique shop has one. I was just in for a few minutes, so I didn't have a chance to have them open it up so that I could look at it more closely. It does have the box with it, which looks like new. The dealer is someone I trust as far as her word on whether it has been used or not.

It's really not a good thing for members to appraise razors, because they may be wrong and you may act on that recommendation. If the recommendation turns out to be really wrong, that's not good for forum harmony. For instance, some people use these forums to make money off members rather than sell off stuff they no longer use or need to recoup some of their investment. Moderators try to stay on top of what's going on the best they can but it is the ultimate responsibility of the members to protect themselves.

Also consider that the antique dealer you trust may not really know how much it's worth. That person probably priced that razor on the basis of what she paid for it, possibly one among many items purchased at an estate sale. Just go with your gut.

I bought 7 NOS Henckles Friodur (Friodur means stainless steel) 5/8 razors for $1,000 last fall. Three years ago I bought an identical razor from a B&B member for $115.00, and it was because of how much I like that razor that I bought the 7. Having said that, I couldn't determine a retail price for it, but I felt good about the sales I made.

I have been involved with straight razors for three years (about the time I joined B&B). In that time, straight razors have become more scarce, prices have gone up, and junk stuff has been more prominent online at auction sites. If you look at some of the online vendors, they are out of a lot of their straight razor equipment.

John, thanks for the information. I wasn't looking for an appraisal so much (which I wouldn't even ask for without multiple photos and much more information), just a general idea, which you have given me. I'm not really a straight razor user, though I do own a few, but was more curious about a typical price. Currently, she has the razor marked at $300.

I personally would not bother for that much. You can find NOS Friodurs on eBay for ~ half that.
