What's new

J Nats

Hello gents, I got some really nice shavette sharp smooth edges thanks to your advice. I was lurking, thinking about another stone. Maksim from JNS didn't think I would benefit from another stone up from my 5+ nakayama asagi. The edges are really very sharp, hht root in or out and I got 3 different blades to do the same thing. So theres nothing to buy at this point? Im not interested in smooth semi sharp edges. I got to finish on the nakayama water only also. That put a bit of polish on the edge. Not synthetic mirror like, but nonetheless polished. WHat are your thoughts? Thanks.

You will always need one more stone.
Well its kind of the endless quest isn't it? I was very happy shaving off my 8k Norton, til someone told me about the 12k, then film, 3 cotis, 2 cnats, 4 jnats. And Im looking for more. Its not about the shave, because they are golden smooth and bbs every time. Oh well. Im sure someone will recommend a stone and I will have to buy it LOL.

Hey man, I am the same way! As much as I like shaving with different razors, I enjoy honing them that much more. Sampling edges from different stones is fun for me, so I'm always looking for something new. First it was coticules, then the Zulu grey, then JNATs, and now the Suehiro 20k....The edges I've been getting from the Gokumyo 20k and my new Nakayama have been second to none though, so I think I'm done buying finishers for a while!!

I did the same thing with Bevel Setters, BTW...I tried the Norton 1k first, then the Naniwa SS, then King, DMT 1200, and now I have settled on the Chosera 1k...

Maybe it's not the finisher and just the fact you're more experienced now.

Ahh, very true!! I have been trying to "revisit" the coticule as well lately, and have been getting some fantastic results, so more experience definitely makes a lot of sense...

Yes the experience plays a big role. But I recently shaved off a naniwa 12k and a norton 8 . They were good shaves but the hones I think speak for themselves. The jnats really kick ***. I was crying about thwm like 2 weeks ago and it all came together quickly. Maybe I get some .000000001 micron diamond film or something. Lol.

stop before it's too late. if you have something that works, use it for a while. give yourself a year and invest your funds into something else? a custom razor? a high end vintage? a high end strop? custom brush?

if what you're saying is that you don't like the edges, or they is more to be desired from them that's a different story and perhaps you look for some different naguras to try out on it?

what kind of lapping equipment do you have? using a dmt? upgrade to an atoma!

I got great edges from my naniwa until I tried lapping film, then the suehiro gokumyo, now jnats. Its not about shave ready even remotely. Im just trying to see how sharp it can be. I dont want to feel like im missing something. The proverbial itch that cant be scratched. Lol. I just got a koma nagura. Will give that a whirl to see where it brings me.

Shavette sharp means as sharp as a de blade. But smooth. I got hht root in or out. Cotis are very sharp but not really really sharp. This is really really sharp IMO as sharp as a feather blade in a shavette. But it is not harsh. I used a shavette for 7 years. I liked it until I knew better. Your face skin feels tired after a shavette. Different feel but equally sharp. I could never go ATG on the neck with it. Now I go 2 pass ATG on the neck only.

You might be able to spend $1000 and squeak out an additional 5% from a blade. Is that worth the money? that's up for you to decide. I think you should buy some other stuff and really take the time to perfect using what you've already purchased.

Thats why im asking you guys. And what you are saying makes alot of sense. So hard jnats are what i have and they produce the edges i want, so i will'leave it at that then.

Sounds good! I personally am the wrong person to ask as I'm guilty of always wanting the "next best thing"...I am currently very happy with my 20k and Nakayama, so I'm calling it quits for a while...trying to put my HAD on the back burner (easier said than done!!):001_tongu I would like a nice y/g thuri at some point though...

Stropping on .1 CBN and then .05 poly diamond on hanging leather might give you some giggles but YMMV ;-). You can also dabble in spraying the .05 poly right on your Jnat for a mirror polished edge...but don't tell anyone since it almost as bad as putting ketchup on a Nathan's hotdog or A1 on a ribeye.

I have .1 um cbn spray. So I will give that a go on one of my jnats this weekend. And I though it was going to be a boring weekend!

I wet my stone a bit and then just a quick spray vs dousing a dry stone. My stone also got polished up where ever the razor was running over.

IMPROVING upon JNats by adding synthetics??????

Just cut out the middle man and use synthetics in the first place. Who are you trying to kid?

Film is great I admit. But I find my jnat edges are sharper than the film edges. Film edges are easier to get and the cost is much less. The main drawback to me is honing blades that are smilers, short heel or toes, or other blade anomalies that will tear or scratch film. If you have dead flat blades, your golden. If not, you will go through a lot of film. I mainly do heel leading half strokes and find the hones are better for what I want to do. New honers should definitely consider it as it is very cost effective and if you can count, you can hone provided the blade is flat.
