j a henckels

Today while looking for a fat boy DE I found a 3/8 JA Henckels straight with no pitting and no hone ware. I think it is Spanish point i but not sure also think it is a wedge I am new to this but not sure. My question is whether or not these are any good I paid 7.50 for it and 5 for a hone did I over pay? And Where would I get a cheap strop or how do I make one? Do I need diamond paste?

Thanks

I didn't know that Henckel made 3/8 but then, it doesn't mean it doesn't exists. Do you have a few pictures of the straight?

I don't think that $7.50 is much even for a 3/8... I would recommend sending it to a honemeister (here's the list: http://wiki.badgerandblade.com/index.php/Honemeister) and get a practice strop, don't pay too much for it as you will nick it for sure.

Thanks for the quick reply unfortunately I don't have a camera to take a picture. And thank you for the list of honemeisters do you recommend one more than the other?

Never mind looked at the list and saw the legal thing saying a mod can't recommend one thanks though.

I have never seen a Henckel wedgie. All I have seen were pretty much full hollow, and the only 3/8 I have ever seen probably started out as a 5/8.

Any razor of a respected brand that can be made shave-ready is worth $7.50 if you ask me. However, 3/8 is getting close to the practical limit of smallness for me, and if a lot of steel is going to be removed from a 3/8 to make a good bevel, then maybe it should be retired.

I'm not a moderator but, my advice would be to choose one close to you or search their names and see what type of work they do. I like to keep anything local where I can. I didn't try a lot of honemeisters so I wouldn't be best to advise one over another.
