What's new

Is this normal?

I've been dabbling in using a straight for a few weeks now. I mainly only use them on weekends when I've got plenty of time. On Saturday it took me 6 passes to get a shave that I was happy to leave the house with. That seems like alot. I know I'm very new to straights and I'm wondering if that sounds normal. I was surprised that I had no irritation and no nicks after 6 passess though. The last 3 passes were more about picking up pieces that I missed on the first 3. Perhaps I need to get up another 30 mins earlier so I can shave with a straight more often so I get more practise.

Probably not normal. Most people's faces wouldn't survive 6 passes that early on. So you're way above normal. It's probably good practice. Keep up the good work.

It might take a bit before you can get a DFS or BBS. I wouldn't do 6 passes, I think that's too much. Keep it 3 and do some touch-ups with your DE!

It is important to use a light touch, and let the sharpness of the razor do the work. If you took 6 passes, and weren't razor burned, then you must have the light part working! Nonetheless, six passes seems too many passes under any circumstance. I would question whether your blade is even close to sharp enough.

Get up earlier. If you want to straight shave you need to forget the DE until you get it down. The straight takes practice and it almost seems like you are starting anew when you wait several days to try again.

I did think about how sharp the blade was so I tested it and it passed the hanging hair test so I think it's pretty sharp. I think you hit the nail on the head with the light passes. I think that the passes were probably too light. I think I'm being a little too timid with the razor.
I'll wait until the weekend and have another go but this time being a bit more aggressive with the strokes and see how I go.
