Hello gents, I've looked on google and can't seem to find much info on this "hone" (that's what the guy who gave it to me said it was). I am curious to know what grit this is and if it is just a sharpening stone or if a real fine grit hone.
Yeah I forget what these were officially for, but I wanna say scythes and mowers. They're usually pretty coarse. 60-220grit I'd estimate. I've gotten a few in lots. Not bad stones at all. Most carborundum were pretty decent for their time.
Sharpening stone and hone are synonyms. "Hone" doesn't imply it is specifically for use with razors. It's just the nounification(tm) of the verb -to hone-; which means to sharpen.
While you're working "nounification" into the conversation, could also shoehorn "contumelious" in as well? On a personal mission to see this done.
Why are you interested in that carborundum? Are you looking for a stone to touch up your straight? I saw earlier that you just started straight shaving. I have an old "barber jr" hone that I don't use and if you want to play with it, then you're welcome to borrow it. It might need some lapping, particularly on the edges, but it should keep your whippeddog straight keen.
If I'm wrong on this, one of the more senior straight shavers should chime in and correct me.
