Is this a New DeLuxe in the wrong box?

I have (what I thought was) a gold New Improved, although I’ve always been confused by the date code: 9068.

I just picked up a Silver New Improved, and confirmed it’s a 1921 (date code: 783317A).

Now I realize that my gold one is not a New Improved because of a lack of stabilizer pins, and the presence of the long slit.

I’m thinking the gold one is actually a New Deluxe?

…and if so, then I guess it’s just in a mismatched case.

Yes, wrong case but the DeLuxe is a better razor in my opinion. Score!

Yes your gold plated razor is a Gillette NEW De Luxe and a 'Criterion' because of the case.

The case could be a mismatch, but it doesn't have to be. Gillette is known for using up inventory of razors and cases to make up all kinds of mix and match sets in the past. Especially in transition periodes to a new razor model.

I have seen quite a few Gillette NEW De Luxe 'Criterion'-sets with a case that says 'New Standard' which correctly got introduced with the New Improved razor years earlier.

I even have an unused specimen like that in my collection, so your case doesn't have to be a mismatch.

@nemo Yeah, I saw the Criterion on Mr Razor and assumed I had a mismatch case because of the New Standard name displayed on my lid. I loved the shave with the gold one, and haven't test-driven the New Improved just yet. I knew the head of the old types are all the same, but I didn't realize I could swap the cap on all of them. The cap on silver NI fits perfectly on both of my single rings, and my bulldog.

@Dyllern Thanks for the details, and for confirming this set might actually be correct. That's an interesting little caveat. Also, the example you have there in your collection is incredible condition, which I'm sure you know, but .... just WOW ! Enjoy that!
