is this a good strop?

From what I have read on this site and direct opinions given to me when asked of more veteran straight shavers, the Big Daddy is a good value strop for 3". You may want to check their site to ensure that's the leather you want.

I have two Big Daddys and I really like them. The price is unbeatable for such a hyooooge strop. I like the detachable hardware too. You can end for end the leather when the right edge gets beat up. You can replace the leather too. I like a big strop and nobody makes a longer 3" strop than this one.

However it is still a good idea to incorporate a slight x into your stropping even though the strop can take the entire edge. It just isn't as critical or crucial.

Actually, I don't think we're supposed to give advice on the cost of eBay items. In any case, I have a Big Mamma (2-1/2" wide) burgundy I bought directly from Star Shaving and like it very much. A good value IMO. Slash is right; good to put a little lateral motion in your stroke.

Apparently, the burgundy and chestnut dyed strops are for razors. The black one is for knives. I didn't know this until I read the handout Star Shaving sent with the strop.

It's a "Buy it Now" item so you can comment on it with no issues. It's not kosher to comment on live auctions.

i have 2 big daddy's.... love them both....

i would buy them again....

and starshavings customer support is topnotch....

I just purchased one. I'm glad I saw this thread because I almost purchased a 3" Walkin Horse for double the money. I just didn't feel that comfortable spending that much money on a strop this early in my journey. That Walkin Horse is nice though...

spend time with the big daddy....

THEN buy the walking horse... lol....

I got an Ambrose which is my favorite strop next to my Kanayama right around the time these started showing up, so I never tried them, but I haven't heard any complaints. And they look pretty decently put together from the pictures. If I were recommending a strop to a beginner who wasn't worried about nicking their first strop and wanted something that they could use for awhile without feeling the need to upgrade, I'd probably recommend a Big Momma (though not in latigo, I'm not a fan of the draw I've found on all the Latigo strops I've tried).

Edit: I just noticed they only offer a felt second component. I'd replace that. In my use of it, it's by far the worst cloth component ever devised. I assume it's intended to be used with pastes, but used clean it is ineffective compared to linen, cotton webbing, cheap plastic webbing, Suede, my pant leg, really every other material I've ever used.

I am actually thinking about replacing the felt with another leather piece for CrOx or diamond paste.

I see all these comments about the felt not be good...makes me wonder if this really is a good deal? For a little bit more money, you can get a higher quality leather strop from TSS ($50) that only has the leather. If your not gonna use the wool felt, is this really a good deal? I'm sure the leather quality and feedback is somewhat a "get what you pay for" situation. Am I wrong?

I'm just a noob straight user trying to feel his way without buying more unneccesary products. Thanks for the feedback.
