Is there any benefit in doing half Chinese 12k half 1 micron diamond?

I've actually got some 1 micron diamond paste and a Chinese 12k just in case the 12k proves too troublesome for a n00b, but now I'm not sure it might not be nice to use both.

If I were to use the diamond paste for (lets say 10 passes) after coming off of my Norton, would that mean I wouldn't have to do the 60-100 passes with the 12k? Would I then be able to get away with 20-30 passes on the 12k? If I do this do I have to remove the tape before I use the pasted paddle (which I haven't even built yet )?

Or should I just use the 12k and suck it up?

^^^ I agree with professorchaos.

The C12K shouldn't be troublesome (as long as it's lapped); it's just slow, so you've got to have patience to let it work. Use the 1micron paste after.

Oh it's lapped :001_rolle.

Would using the paste after the 12k still reduce the number of passes required on the 12k? I've read horror stories about 100 laps being required etc...

No. You really want to get a uniform/consistent scratch pattern across the entire edge before moving to the next higher (finer) grit medium. For me, that means 80-100 laps on my Chinese 12K.

I'd hardly call 100 laps on the chinese 12 a horror story. That's just a little light petting for that stone. There was this one newbie who spent 10 hours on a Norton 4k trying to get his bevel set, now that was a horror story....

Well that was where I was going in my mind. If it takes someone good 100 laps... how long will it take me?

I'll just do it in multiple sittings.

100 laps isn't that many if you are only doing one razor. I no longer have a Chinese 12K, but I do frequently use a very slow Japanese hone. Generally speaking, I can take a hollow ground razor from no bevel to shave ready in 15-20 minutes. Since you, as a n00b, will likely be more careful, I'd say it will take two times as long.
