Is there a vintage equivalent to the Merkur 37C Slant?

I really like the 37C, and I'm wondering if it is a replica of, a close copy of, or inspired by, a particular vintage razor.

There are Pomco and Horffitz(sp?) branded slants from back in the days, but I think these are just rebranded Merkur slants.

The vintage Hoffritz Slant is a near duplicate of the modern Merkur 37C Slant. The differences are the Hoffritz Slants usually have a silver plated handle and the cap of the Hoffritz is not scalloped as in the modern Merkur. Also, the build quality of the Hoffritz is better that the modern Merkur. However, the build quality of nearly all 40-50 year old razors is probably better than their modern equivalents. As mentioned above, Merkur made the Hoffritz.

Merkur was a stand alone company for a long time with a proud tradition, the last remain German safety razor manufacturer.
Around the turn of the 21st century they were purchased by Dovo.
Some people feel that the quality of their product has declined since the take over.

Merkur originally made a different style of slant. If you search the safety razor forum or the BST you can probably find some pictures. They had a thinner handle, which was prone to cracking like the older Gillettes. I believe they were WWII era or earlier, or at least that is what I recall.

The Slant is a 1931 design and has been produced like this since then. That's about as vintage as it gets, imho.

You'd be referring to this?

I am, as we speak, desinging a slant w/a Pomco head (pics to follow) I don't know if pomco is a Merkur knockoff, but it is, IMO, the best slant I have ever used...I just didn't like the short handle....so I am fixing that!:tongue_sm

Pomco slant head with my handle design.

Wow, Pike. I love your work! Did you extend the handle so you could use it as a head shaver, or simply due to your preference of longer handles? Between you and Bob I continue to be amazed....

I always prefer a longer handle....but I did get a little crazywith this one! :) The long handle (for me) makes head shaving much easier....It's just easier to maintain the blade angle. The added weight is nice too. I really like this Pomco head, my fave slant so far! :)
