Is there a general # of laps for a hone?

Unfortunately, no...you have to hone until a given hone has taken the edge just about as far as it can. For that reason, I don't even count anymore.

To many variables to guess here...
in fact you didn't even name the hone...

A good rule of thumb is the proceed in sets of 10 laps and check the edge in between until you start to learn the feel of the hone and the steel...

This does not apply to some of the high grit Naturals IE: Chinese Hone they eat laps for breakfast...

+1... Way too many variables to venture a guess. If you want help, give as many specifics as you can (what hones you have, what razor you have, state of the edge, etc., etc., etc....)

+1, it will save you and your razors from lots of very frustrating trial and error. It’s like a lot of aquired skills, it’s easy when you know how.
