What's new

Is the King dead? My new Thater vs. my Rooney Heritage 3XL.

I have been calling my Rooney Heritage 3XL (Stubby) the best brush in the world ever since I got it, but I may have spoken too soon.

My new Thater 4292/6 2-band brush arrived today. The brush measures 30mm x 54mm x 112mm OAH (nominal knot size is 28mm, so i got lucky). Unlike most Thaters, it's fan-shaped, so the size & shape make it a direct competitor with my Rooney Heritage 3XL Stubby (30mm x 53mm). The bloom on the Thater is significantly larger than the Rooney. It's a high-density brush with plenty of backbone and soft tips - in other words, a typical Thater. The Thater is still wet in the pic, so the bloom will be even larger when it dries. I did my standard comparison test - I loaded each brush with identical soap for 45 seconds and then whipped it up for 60 seconds. The results were about the same as far as lather consistency and volume. Heat retention may have been a tad better with the Rooney and the face-feel was better (softer) with the Thater. The workmanship is outstanding on both brushes. The Thater was positively stunning right out of the box with its big shock of light, light tips. Based on overall size, the Thater 4125/3 2-band is a more direct competitor to the Rooney, and it is available as a fan, but I like the slightly larger 4292 handle because I bowl-lather and have big hands.

This Thater is the very brush up for tonight's shave. If it's like it's Bulb Brother, then you stand seconded in your opinion of its excellence, though I've never had a Rooney to try.

Just received my 24mm 4292/5 yesterday. It's a bit different than its bigger brother - bigger bloom, less backbone and slightly softer tips. The white handle is the new, smaller brush. Still a terrific brush.

Blue: Just about everything I read says that a bulb is preferable, but my face says different. And I THINK (no hard evidence) that bulbs tend to be bigger soap hogs than fans...

A year ago everyone said fans were preferable. That's the thing about preferences, you should use what you prefer.

I think I need to find my own preference now. That's some serious food for thought. Thanks!

Both of those brushes are wonderful in their own right, there is nothing wrong with them both being favorite brushes. I have numerous favorites and I choose them accordingly, depending on my mood.

To tell the truth, I'm a little disappointed with the smaller brush - it feels more like a 3-band than a two, although it clearly is a 2-band. The smaller brush does not have Thater's signature high density knot, which explains the bigger bloom. I was surprised that there would be this much variation between two brushes from the same series. I like both 2-bands and 3-bands, but I was expecting 2-band performance and didn't get it.
