What's new

Is it just me or are straight razor videos on youtube seriously.

Is it just me or are straight razor videos on youtube seriously lacking good lather? I found a playlist with 55 videos and more than half have really bubbly looking lather. Does lather not matter as much with straights, am I overthinking it or what? My lather is almost like beaten egg whites or something, it forms peaks and super cushiony. Not to sound silly but I would be scared of serious razor burn even with my DE razors using the bubbly foam on a lot of videos.

Lather for straight shaving is typically thinner/slicker than what you're describing. However, I do agree that in many vids the lather is rather lacking in it's appearance. As much as I think GeoFatBoy is a good dude, his lather usually looks very dry and thin to me. Mantic's is always purdy tho.

IMO straights produce far less drag when shaving and I find it works very well with a light lather - no increased performance if I work it for 2 minutes, so it really just saves time.

Definitely. My DE-lather is "pillowy", my straight razor lather is almost-but-not-quite runny. Works best that way.

Geofatboy had me wondering too. I guess it's in the norm for straight lather to look different. I'm glad I asked because it was just one of those things that was bugging me.

I've learned over time, that with a straight, less creamy lather is definitely better. I have had thick, whipped cream lather on my face, only to have the razor 'catch' and slice me good. If my face is even remotely lubricated, I can get a clean shave.

I only did the egg white stiff peak stuff once or twice when I first started DE shaving. I face lather now. I may not look like Santa Claus when I have finished lathering, but I do get a damn fine shave.
