Interesting Darwin Variation

I have been away from here a lot lately and not been on the Bay much but I looked on there tonight and there is an interesting Darwin variation there. It comes in a Darwin Deluxe case but looks like a cross between a Deluxe and a Standard. Interestingly, I don't see the "Patent Cobalt Steel" stamp anywhere on it like mine and others I have seen. I cannot import a pic but maybe someone else can post pics here for posterity. Oh...and you can buy it for $1,300 (plus $12 shipping). Glad I got my Deluxe when I did!

Yeah, it pops up once in a while, the seller hasn't been able to sell it and won't lower the price anymore. I believe it is the adjustable Darwin.

Hmmmm, now that you say that, I thought that seller was in Germany and the adjustable he was selling was a 2 piece. This one is in the U.S and its a 3 piece. I had seen it up a while ago but as I said, I have not been here much. Must not be thinking clearly I guess.

This one is a three piece Darwin, not the adjustable one. It looks like it is a variation of a Darwin Deluxe. The cap and guard are the Deluxe design. This one has the words Darwin on both sides of the cap instead of Darwin on one side and the reg. no. on the other as is more common with the Deluxes. Also it is not stamped "patent cobalt steel" on the guard plate as most of the Deluxes are.

I looked at that yesterday and can not tell if the light is distorting the lines of the handle or the other way around.

Oops, I saw the price and just assumed it was the one from Germany, my fault.

Connie, the thing that throws me is the cap. I know it is hard to see in the pics but the top cap is almost curved round uniformly like the standard top cap is. My Deluxe is a lot flatter and looks almost triangular from the side because its thick in the center where the pins are but very thin out at the edge by the blade. Does that make sense? That's why I thought it was a cross of the two or hybrid or whatever.

I think it is just a newer deluxe, it has Darwin twice on the cap and no patent info because they probably held the rights by then...It looks like there are less of the human "errors" than the previous deluxes . My standard is similar in these aspects, Darwin is on the cap twice and the head seems more uniform than older standards...only speculations.

The guy from germany is a bit of a berk. If he subtracted the $ ebay would get if someone BIN and tried selling it privately, he might have a shot of getting something close to what he wants. I'd love to see the kinds of shady messages a seller with an item like that gets...

Weren't the original caps sort of pyramid shaped to mimic the feel of a hollow ground straight on each side?

I have never heard it put this way but yes, my Deluxe's cap is pyramid shaped. Interesting thought. That mimic of a straight could be why it's my most effective razor.

Every Darwin I see just reinforces my belief that they were hand made/tooled, if only partially.
