Interchangable Baseplate Razor August (IBRA 2024)

Hello friends

Clear night. Today, I'm making my debut at IBRA 2024 with Greencult 2.0 and its most aggressive plate, the IV, with a gap of 1.05 mm and exposure of 0.20. It's much more than I need. I imagine it's more than physiological, I guess it's psychological, too. I have the feeling that it shaves more than just my beard, it also shaves part of my soul. As if I renew myself with each shave with it, discarding residues that no longer belong to me. It's an addictive feeling...

Taking advantage of this special moment, I used a GSB (2) that goes very well with it, PdP 63, Semogue SOC Finest and Pinaud Clubman Special Reserve.

With us in this magical moment, Frank.

Rating: 10

Have a nice evening and great shaves!

Razor: Yaqi Mellon / DSC ZOC hybrid SLOC, Destroyer Ti handle
Blade: Astra SP
Brush: Mühle Purist Silvertip Badger, Ebonite handle
Cream: Speick Shaving Cream
Aftershave: Barrister and Mann - Seville Splash
EdP: Creed - Himalaya

This is really a hybrid DOC/SLOC razor. It features the Yaqi Mellon zamak top cap on the DSC ZOC baseplate (plated zamak). Interestingly the Mellon zamak top cap is also interchangeable with the Fatip OC and the Mühle R41 and probably the DSC Z0 given that the Z0 is a clone of the R41.

I did shave before with the ZOC/Mellon hybrid (i.e. ZOC cap on Mellon plate) and that works equally well. I honestly don't feel much of a difference in shaves, but the Mellon in its non-hybrid form seems a tad smoother to me.

I'm kinda in.

I'm accidentally on theme already: shaved side-by-side today with the RazoRock Superslant, baseplates L2++OC and L3++OC.

RR Superslant: I also have the L1++OC open comb baseplate and two of the nine SB baseplates, L3 and L3++.
Karve Christopher Bradley: B,C,D baseplates in OC. Plus a couple SB, somewhere...
Blackland ERA: OC Level 4 and 5.

I did not get along with my Rockwell 6C. Sold long ago.

My goal is to use my Superslant frequently, but I will target at least one shave with each of the Karve and ERA OC baseplates. And perhaps the Karve SBs, if they can be located.

Meanwhile, and I quote from the Superslant thread:

"Second RRSS L3OC shave today. Up against the L2OC.

>Gillette Platinum (2)
>Colgate Handy Grip Shave Stick
>Omega 10066
>copious Pinaud Lime Sec splash

L2OC shaved the left side, L3OC shaved the right

Bottom line, L3OC has definitely more blade feel, slightly better efficiency. I would pick the L2OC for daily driving, L3OC for extra stubble or to achieve a particularly close result.

I was chasing the baby around my neck today. Monsieur Pinaud was quite direct and a bit brutal."

Note to Beto:
Lots of Ivie Anderson with the Duke, Sarah Vaughn gigging around, and 50s/60s Anita O'Day lately.

And catching up on Lady Day as well. She used to be my one and only gal singer.
What a wonderful post you have, my dear friend. All of them are top-notch singers, magnificent music.

Thank you very much from the bottom of my heart. You made me very happy this morning.

Have a great day, dear John.

Today's tools of choice were:

Rockwell 6S
Lord Super Chrome (11th use)
AP Shave Co 26mm Cashmere
TOBS Sandalwood soap
TOBS Sandalwood cologne

The razor and blade were great and this big brush whipped up plenty of lather but I did feel a bit of brush burn afterwards.

If I ever decide to go down the Rockwell 6S road, I'll pick the red one. That's a cool looking razor... 👍

Enjoy!

Rockwell 6S / Amazon Solimo (likely Personna)
Rockwell6S-6Jul24.jpg

I used plate 6, but actually it doesn't get much more efficient after plate 3/4. It never becomes a super efficient razor but it's always safe and fun. I still think they should offer a nicer finish than raw or not so great paint colors.

The blades used are from a 100 pack from Amazon, but they cry much shave like Personna, share the packaging and even have the glue spots exactly like the Personna blades. They also did the rebranded Mühle blades.

This said, Game Changer and Lupo and their many clones are working out better for me.

Day 2 Karve CB SB-F

Today's set up:
A fresh Wizamet Super Iridium w/ Karve CB SB-F baseplate. Two passes [wtg/atg], one day worth of growth were to be tackled.

Here's my "in a nutshell" shave evaluation:

Blade feel
● 7.5/10

Efficiency - whilst shaving
● 8.5/10

Efficiency - longevity of results
● 7.5/10

Ease of use whilst shaving
● 3.5/10

Ease of use to achieve the desired shave result (DFS+/almost BBS)
● 8/10

JAHE's enjoyment score:
● 6.0/10

Final thought: On the edge!

20240802_174952-02-01.jpeg
Here's why:

I decided to not go up the Karve alphabet in a stringent way... so instead of picking the SB-B baseplate I opted for some variation and took the SB-F for a spin. And boy, what a difference today's shave with the SB-F made in comparison to the SB-A baseplate.

While yesterday's shave was characterised by rather recklessly executed shaving strokes (simply because injuries simply don't happen with the mild SB-A base plate), a different wind was blowing today: caution was the order of the day, because the combo of a 1.23 blade gap and 0.22 blade exposure did not invite you to go to work with pressure and full throttle, but required a considerate guiding of the razor, thanks to a higher dose of blade feel.

The razor didn't shave a part of my soul (awesome metaphor @Beto Salatini 👍), but the SB-F baseplate felt close to the level of blade feel when intimidation begins. At least that's been the case with a Wizamet loaded.

The level of efficiency whilst shaving, however, was very satisfying. Once I had finished my two passes, an almost BBS result was achieved. No nicks or irritation.

But honestly, I wouldn't necessarily want to feel a higher level of blade feel on my skin... this combo absolutely provided enough blade feel. And the shave felt a bit closer than it actually was. The first grainy feel rubbing atg reappeared a bit sooner than expected.

IBR A3 - IBR slant v a classic

IMG_6375.jpeg

Hardware:
>two Gillette Platinums (3) loaded into:
>RazoRock Superslant L3++ OC, Ti custom
>Merkur Superslant, OG silver

Lubricant suite:
>vintage high tallow Williams Mug
>Rubberset 200-6
>Captain's Choice copper bowl

Splash:
>Aqua Velva Ice Blue

Outstanding shave, even though I need to spend more time with each of these razors before I can deliver the full A++ experience that these tools offer. Any touch up required is on me, not the razor.

The huge barber's beast of a Rubberset is ready for the next three customers, even just semi-loaded. Mmmmm, tallow.

RazoRock Superslant L3++ OC / BIC Platinum
L3ppOCAug24.jpg

I must confess, I am writing this a few hours before shaving, but I have plans for tonight and now have time to write down my thoughts.

I have the SuperSlant L3++ OC, the Wunderbar and had the L3 SB. They are pretty similar, the SuperSlants shave steeper and they are bending the blade sharper than the Wunderbar. They are not hand-finished by Michael or other people from Razorock as it was the case for the Wunderbar, they are a bit more industrialized design and IMO are not quite as smoothly cutting as the Wunderbar. But they give a bit more feedback and warning, and that's all I wanted from the Wunderbar, notorious for slicing away skin without me noticing. I also simply prefer riding the bar/comb and not the cap. By now I can adapt to shallow razors much better than years ago, though. In general I like to play with the angle of a razor, this is why heavily guided, lightweight razors are not among my favorites.

The L3 was gifted to a neighbor. He was boasting that he totally mastered the Merkur 23c something I gave him, so I borrowed him my R41, to satisfying results. At least for me, he was bleeding like a pig. The L3 also caused some blood, but he got used to it by now. The Superslants are not that bloodthirsty or hyper aggressive, not even the L3 plates.

Handle and stand: Alpha Viper, Alpha stand.

A certain forum member bedazzled me to think about Titanium brushes, but I resisted so far. I cannot help but see that my Razorock F-400 is, while being still in great shape, getting gray synthetic hair/fiber... haha.

Now if that would not be a good reason to fall victim to enablement, but usually I always rather bought a razor and saved on the brushes.

Please note that I find the + and ++ modifications to be more significant than higher gap for the Superslant. The ++ plates have a "step" milled in the baseplate that is quite serious and the reason for increased efficiency, but it also makes them more likely to bite.

P.S. after posting this I just shaved. I say it again, people might believe they know slants because they had one already, but SuperSlant and Wunderbar are like Shetland pony vs Arabian stallion. No disrespect to the ponies, I admire their patience with stupid kids and fat parents.

Day 4 - Karve CB SB-G

Today's set up:
A fresh Wizamet Super Iridium w/ Karve CB SB-A baseplate. Two passes [wtg/atg], two days worth of growth were to be tackled.

Here's my "in a nutshell" shave evaluation:

Blade feel
● 7.0/10

Efficiency - whilst shaving
● 9.0/10

Efficiency - longevity of results
● 8.5/10

Ease of use whilst shaving
● 6.5/10

Ease of use to achieve the desired shave result (DFS+/almost BBS)
● 9.0/10

● 7.5/10

Final thought: the butcher's knife delivered.

20240804_151933.jpeg

Here's why:
I skipped yesterday's shave, so today I had to tackle two days worth of growth. A good opportunity to pick the SB-G baseplate, which is a very capable shaving tool.

Surprisingly, the blade feel felt easier on my skin today than in course of the last shave with the SB-F. I'm assumming the core difference was "two days worth of growth" today vs. only one day in my recent shave with the F baseplate. Possibly my skin had better recovered today and therefore was less sensitive.

In terms of efficiency the SB-G baseplate made no prisoners. The razor mowed down the whiskers like nobody's business.
The G-baseplate is very efficient baseplate, but not a cruel one. However, a light touch is crucial.

My preferred use case with this baseplate (and likely the F baseplate) will be 2 days worth of growth from now on (or more, although this happens rarely).

I ended up with a pretty close and clean BBS shave free of nicks. Excellent shave!

I will get to these IBRs:

Karve Christopher Bradley. OC B, C, D, SB C, E; 3-inch handle, but I always use my treasured Rosseforp company time custom handle. RIP, Doug.

Blackland ERA metal "3-D printed" razor

I got the LEVEL 4 OC originally, then grabbed the LEVEL 5 OC when they were closing out due to their 3-D supplier moving to higher priority work.

Again, I was looking for a shorter handle. That is the thin RazoRock stainless steel homage to the Gillette common bar. Shorter, skinnier, lighter.
