Interchangable Baseplate Razor August (IBRA 2024)

Iridian

Cool and slimy
I read quite a lot who preferred the .68 SB/OC to the .95 and I think while I might still prefer the Slim plate, the efficiency of the .68 might not be noticeably worse than the .95, so I would have to work a bit to get a BBS, but there might less risk involved. The .95 OC can nick me, funnily I prefer the .5 Slim OC over the .95 OC because while more aggressive, it is actually better behaved and less risk involved with the smaller gap.

I just read through this again, it makes sense, just read it twice if it doesn't make sense. :)

P.S. no, no wine today. Maybe I need some alcohol to write concise sentences again. Worrying thoughts... :biggrin1:

Head Shave
I have some of these razors, was going to use the OC Karve SS C *once a fav*, but decided to try a Karve Alum D bar.
Soap: Arko (because I use it one day a year, in Aug; given this is mixed w williams mug)
Brush: some huge RR N.....had enough lather for 4 shaves.....use it very seldom as it will almost push lather into the eyes, it's good for the head.
Blade: 7 0'clock Permasharp (1st).
AS Aqua Velva Musk

2 pass smooth shave, a bit of irritation on the neck

Well might try either the OC or maybe a RR Lupo or that russian SS.... I do favor RR Lupo over most of the ones I have...

Here's why:
It's been a coincidence that I picked the .95 OC for my shave today.
I do agree with @Iridian 's summary above.

It mirros my experience in terms of .68 OC v. .95 OC . In comparison to the .68 OC the increase of efficiency which the .95 OC provides indeed isn't as noticeable as one might expect given the significant larger blade gap. Sure, the .95 OC gets the job done easier in crucial areas of my face (chin, jaw line) where the larger gap is playing to its strengths. But overall... the .68 OC is still a great option when it comes to daily shaving. I'd pick the .95 OC whenever more stubble needs to be removed instead. Same goes for the .50 Slim.

Btw, no nicks today.

Day 28 - Blackland Vector SB

Today's set up:
Blackland Vector SB w/fresh Kai Captain blade. Two passes [wtg/atg], one and a half days worth of growth were to be tackled.

Here's my "in a nutshell" shave evaluation:

Blade feel
● 7.0/10

Efficiency - whilst shaving
● 7.75/10

Efficiency - longevity of results
● 7.5/10

Ease of use whilst shaving
● 7.0/10

Ease of use to achieve the desired shave result (DFS+/almost BBS)
● 8.0/10

JAHE's enjoyment score:
● 7.5/10

● Final thought: a sports car.

Here's why:
I have been on the verge of selling my Vector earlier this year, but the recent shaves with it really gave me food for thought... It's an impressive shaver with an unique design... Maneuverability of this head is like 13/10.
A solid dose of blade feel and a very satisfying level of efficiency ,(even more so with the Vector's OC baseplate) are the main characteristics of this shaver. Did I already mention it's maneuverability? 😉

I likely just should keep this sports car of a razor. It's been a really good shave today.

Your sales pitch definitely improved after you decided to keep it! 🤔😁

My oil tank finally gets moved inside the house next week, after numerous delays.

Was still busy enough with this and other things to forget uploading shave pics. Also got tempted by the Ares in steel but remembered that what I actually want and really need is a stand for it. All these lignophiles really should go for steel, Crom would be pleased by that. 🗡️

Day 29 - Timeless .95 SCL

Today's set up:
Timeless SS .95 SCL w/ fresh Polsilver blade. Two passes [wtg/atg], one day worth of growth were to be tackled.

Here's my "in a nutshell" shave evaluation:

Blade feel
● 5.0/10

Efficiency - whilst shaving
● 6.0/10

Efficiency - longevity of results
● 6.0/10

Ease of use whilst shaving
● 7.5/10

Ease of use to achieve the desired shave result (DFS+/almost BBS)
● 6.0/10

JAHE's enjoyment score:
● 6.5/10

● Final thought: enjoyable!

Here's why:
I had a great shave in the morning with the scallopped Timeless .95 SB. Providing a good balance of efficiency and bladefeel, the. 95 SCL performed effortlessly and left my skin well shaven and calm. Liking it.

Now that I have shaved with the .38, .68 OC, .95 SCL, .95 OC, .50 Slim OC and the mean .78 OC in the last couple of weeks, it's fair to say I really LOVE the Timeless lineup 😁

In terms of smoothness the baseplates behave like this (imo):

.38 (super smooth) =/< .68 OC < .95 SCL < .95 OC < .50 Slim OC < .78 OC (sweet Jesus)

For my "two passes plus" use case (wtg/atg passes plus a bit of touchups) all baseplates named above safe the .50 Slim OC and the .78 OC fall into MY daily driver department.

The Slim OC is a step up in terms of bladefeel and efficiency over the .95 OC (used by me whenever 2 or 2+ days worth of growth are in question), but the OC Slim is not a beast as the .78 OC is. The really aggressive .78 OC is reserved for those days when a real challenge is needed (livin' on the edge at its best... 🤣 as I have said before: it's the end level big boss for me 🩸).

I'll have to do a side by side shave with the. 38 and .68 OC to establish my findings, but I'm confident regarding the rest.
Perhaps this comparison shave will be my gran finale of IBRA 2024...

However, I may take the opportunity to thank you all for your contributions in course of the month. 😃👍

The only thing I love more about the .95 plate compared to the Slim is that one can easily push a q-tip through the gap. The Slim works only with force, it's just a flatter, "slim" head.

The theme of the shave was slim & slime, I am now back at 100% proper Smurf skin color.

Thank you @JAHE for IBRA. I visited some baseplates I otherwise neglect and realized just how many IBRs I own. I finished August far from home in the middle of hay harvest, helping with ranch chores and NOT SHAVING.

I am now into Slantember, but shaving daily with the L3++OC plate in my RazoRock Superslant ultra-IBR. My thought is that more than 10 baseplate options puts an IBR into ultra status. Fun month!
