Interchangable Baseplate Razor August (IBRA 2024)

Day 20 - Timeless Bronze SB .38

Today's set up:
Timeless Bronze .38 SB w/ second use Wizamet Super Iridium.
Two passes [wtg/atg], one day worth of growth were to be tackled.

Here's my "in a nutshell" shave evaluation:

Blade feel
● 4.5/10

Efficiency - whilst shaving
● 6.0/10

Efficiency - longevity of results
● 5.5 /10

Ease of use whilst shaving
● 8.0/10

Ease of use to achieve the desired shave result (DFS+/almost BBS)
● 8.0/10

JAHE's enjoyment score:
● 8.0/10

Final thought: comfortable comrade

20240820_103007.jpeg

Here's why:
Needless to say, the safety bar sibbling of the Times Bronze is the way more comfortable option of the two Bronze baseplates. The gap of just .38mm seems to be ridiculously low, but it isn't a super mild razor. I'd place this one easily in between the .68 and the .95 baseplates as blade feel and efficiency is concerned. I've no clue why this is the case... likely some minor positive blade exposure is at play.

Anyway, put in a sharp blade into this beauty, say a Nacet or a PermaSharp, and you are ready to rumble... With blades as sharp as today's one time used Wizamet SI, this razor can easily be used on a daily basis.

I really like this base plate and the look of the razor doesn't make it any less attractive...

High Efficiency Razors Summer 2024
Interchangable Baseplate Razor August (IBRA 2024)

Hello friends

Another clear and warm winter day. Today I chose items that I hadn't used in a long time. The excellent B&M Seville, Rockwell 6C (@6/5/5) a razor that even on the highest plate is still smooth, the unanimous Nacet (2) and inspired by the interesting theme of this week's SOTD, I reached for my old Yardley Pure Badger, a wonderful brush that is over 30 years old. I finished with the delicious Ach. Brito Agua de Colonia Antiga.

Brightening up the event, the splendid Dakota Staton.

Rating: 10

Have a nice evening and great shaves!

● 7.0/10

Efficiency - longevity of results
● 7.0 /10

Final thought: a delight!

20240821_103900.jpeg

Here's why:
Wolfman WR2 razors do quality as IBR, since every topcap can be matched with the different baseplates available, no matter which baseplate is attached.

Today I used the bronze WR .95 SB baseplate with other SS razor parts which is mild yet sufficiently efficient at the very same time.

The razor mowed down two days worth of growth with ease and class. What a splendid tool this razor is. Totally enjoyable.

Admittedly, Wolfman WR2 razors don't sell for a song, but if you happen to choose the right blade gap it will reward you with excellent, smooth and efficient shaves. In all honesty, I still have to wait for bad shave with one of these razors. The .95 didn't let me down today, either.

Wolfman WR2 are definitely pinnacles of DE razors in my den.

Enjoy your shaves, y'all!

I am broke, man. Was looking at the Ares V2 SS recently, too, but figured I haven't even shaved that much with my Ares V2 bronze yet. Definitely need fitting stands before I buy more Lambda stuff, they are out of sight and out of my mind in these wooden boxes. Don't want to say coffins or Wally will come and whack me.

I'm sneaking in because I didn't see this thread initially, and my baseplates are 3D printed to fit a Fat Handle Tech. So it wasn't initially an interchangeable razor.

There's a thread by @SlimGem with his files for this purpose. It makes for a nice change from the stock Tech. He has three levels of aggression, and has open combed, closed comb, and combination combs ( total of nine plates ).

Today I used the Level 2 Open Comb, and had a lovely and efficient shave. A simple 2 pass DFS.

The Ares isn't an IBR, is it?
Or are the baseplates of Ares and Athena interchangable?

Oh, my mind was wandering. Was thinking about the Wolfman and that I already have quite a lot of Chinese clones and lately the Lambdas also price-wise got into the price range of a Wolfman. :)

I have not yet tried to switch baseplates between the two but will give it a try soon, just shaved with the Ares today.

Be careful when shaving this way.
I have no idea if anyone who has tried it could still report on it...🤣

Razor: Yaqi Mellon / DSC ZOC hybrid, Razorock Superknurl handle
Blade: Perma-Sharp
Brush: Arno 26mm Manchurian 2-band badger, Jade Palace
Soap: Barrister and Mann - Fougère Classique (sample)
Aftershave: Old Spice Classic
Aftercare: Osma Alum Block, Aloe Vera Gel
EdT: Bleu de Chanel

Frankenrazor par excellence: DSCosmetic ZOC topcap on Yaqi Mellon baseplate; Superknurl handle attached. Lovely combination, that. I realize that this thread was actually meant for "one razor with interchangeable baseplates" and not really for monstrosities such as this one. My apologies. I hope that my little creation there, is welcome nonetheless.

It's a good shaver, just not very efficient. CCS in two passes WTG with some buffing (2 days worth of growth), it's however quite a mild shave. The self-lubricating function works just as well as on the respective counterparts and provides great glide during the shave. I guess that contributes to its mildness.

Day 23 - Stirling Soap Company ST baseplate

Final thought: blade feel time!

20240822_192804-02-01-01.jpeg

Here's why:
Ok, it's been blade feel time. Shaving with the SSC ST razor isn't as scaring as with their HA baseplate, but it hasn't been an easy shave either. A lot of blade feel was going on even on the wtg pass. However, I was pretty amazed by the level of its efficiency at the very same time. This thing didn't take prisoners, boy, what a scythe.
DFS+ after one pass.

No weepers today, but this razor will definitely remind you if your technique was floppy.

Cheers!

I never thought of the Fatip Piccolo SE2 as an IBR, given that I had no intention to ever use the gentile/SB plate. I just admired the gold and black sophistication.

Today I used the SB option with the Gillette Platinum (5) for touch up after two SR passes. Very smooth, definitely not as effective as the OC.

All this, plus Col Conk Lime as a starter, lathered for prep, and my ©️1935 bottle of Pinaud Lilac Vegetal to provide a vintage splash.

Day 24 - Timeless Slim .50 OC

Today's set up:
Timeless Slim .50 OC w/ third use Wizamet Super Iridium. Two passes [wtg/atg], one day worth of growth were to be tackled.

Here's my "in a nutshell" shave evaluation:

Blade feel
● 8.0/10

Efficiency - whilst shaving
● 8.5/10

Efficiency - longevity of results
● 7.0 /10

Ease of use whilst shaving
● 3.5/10

Ease of use to achieve the desired shave result (DFS+/almost BBS)
● 9.0/10

JAHE's enjoyment score:
● 7.0/10

Final thought: Slim. And just a tiny bit shady!

20240824_111501-01.jpeg

Here's why:
The .50 OC is labeled as the most aggressive razor in the Timeless lineup, but I don’t support this finding. Instead, the .78OC Bronze holds this crown with ease.

Anyway, the OC Slim isn't a slouch either. The blade feel is comparably mild if you choose a shallow angle but this shallow angle might expose you to weepers and perhaps even nicks thanks to the geometry of the razor. But then again, I prefer this shallow angle over a more steep one, since the latter adds a scraping touch to the shave and adds some harshness.
Today, I ended up with two minor weepers which were flushed away by the aftershave, so it's not been a big deal.

Overall, it's not a bad advice to treat this razor with a little bit of respect.

Day 25 - Razorock Super Slant L2

Today's set up:
Razorock Super Slant L2 w/fresh Polsilver Stainless. Two passes [wtg/atg], one day worth of growth were to be tackled.

Here's my "in a nutshell" shave evaluation:

Blade feel
● 6.0/10

Efficiency - whilst shaving
● 6.5/10

Efficiency - longevity of results
● 6.5./10

Ease of use whilst shaving
● 4.5 /10

Ease of use to achieve the desired shave result (DFS+/almost BBS)
● 5.5/10

JAHE's enjoyment score:
● 6.5/10

Final thought: Wrong blade chosen

20240825_110922-01.jpeg

Here's why:
It's been a good shave, but I missed the opportunity to have an even better one. I have to blame myself, because it was me who decided to load the vintage Polsilver Stainless.

The other ingredients for this shave performed flawless. But the blade razor combo didn't convince me. I ended up with a bit of tugging in the ATG pass, more than I'm used to with this otherwise excellent razor. I didn't like that. A sharper blade would have been a better choice. But hey, sometimes the stars aligne, sometimes they don't... 🤷‍♂️ anyway, I still had a good shave.

Fatip Piccolo SE2 OC - smooth sailing

IMG_6417.jpeg

Today I had planned the OC baseplate (using the same Gillette Platinum) for the touch ups. But my mood dictated DE for the full shave.

Very comfortable, very easy, very fast. I completed this shave in about the same amount of time I needed for touch ups with the gentile SB. Of course, I didn't have to search out a seldom used SB plate from the back of a drawer.

Supporting players:
Gillette Platinum (6)
vintage high tallow Williams Mug puck
Simpson Barbican boar, still breaking in
Richard's Rub badger blend splash

I have traveled through quite a number of Fatips. The Piccolo OC and the Piccolo FOCS have stuck in my rotation. Either would be fine as my only razor, not that 'only razor' is happening for me.

Despite the low gap, this is the "A" version as B with 1.35 and C with 1.5 were somehow not available on AliExpress, you is a very efficient WR2 clone due to significant exposure.

Even though I am a bit too late, I hope Herr @JAHE will allow me a small contribution to this interesting thread.
I received recently my new Superslant L3++ plate. Am quite surprised by the big difference between it and the L3+. More details in the Superslant thread.

● 8.0/10

JAHE's enjoyment score:
● 10/10

20240827_071223-01.jpeg

Here's why:
The .68 OC Timeless baseplate is fairly new in my den, but it has reached the status of a favourite in no time. Just an excellent and user friendly tool, this .68 OC is! It's an text book daily driver for me and my face.

There's just enough blade feel to notice where the shaving takes place. It's super comfortable thanks to the rounded combs, though. It had no issues with whiping away my whiskers. I even got me once lightly on the chin, but that's been a plain user error. When enjoyment takes over... 🙈

I loved this shave!
