What's new

In praise of SE shaving

I'm not new to it because I've been using an injector for a month or so now(so far still my favorite razor to shave with right now). Last nite I tried a shave with a recently acquired Gem Jr. and I rather liked it. Since I was new to this razor I decided to just make one WTG pass. I did so and rinsed my face off and felt smooth just a little stuble. I got a little greedy and relathered for a touch up. On my chin area I went XTG that was fine so on my neck and jawline I went ATG and I got a few weepers there but I'll work on that. I'll have to use a few times more hopefully with the same results but so far it looks promising.

It just gets better and better with time and practise. It's getting harder and harder for me to force myself to use a DE a couple times a week instead of an SE every day. And I like to use, and get very good shaves with the DE, it's just the SE is so much fun to use and the results are hard to beat.

I've used my Ever-Ready head on my BullMastiff handle now for around 8 times or so.....I can fully understand how it is going to be hard to rotate the DE in! It just gets better and better!

Yep, there is really no reason to use DE stuff, once you've become accustom to SE shaving. Unless you feel guilty about not using all the DE gear you have collected.

I stuffed all mine in a box so as not to be constantly reminded of how much I have invested in it!

I had my first SE shave today with my newly acquired Schick Type E. Absolutely great. BBS except for one spot on my neck and zero irritation. Superb results on tricky spots around my chin and on my sensitive neck.

I used the Schick blades from Amazon, but I have some feather blades I'm going to cut down and try in a few weeks.

In short, I think I'm going to be hooked on SE shaving. I think I'll go scour the B/S/T for a good deal on a GEM 1912 . . .

The only DE razor left in my regular rotation is the EJ DE89. I still like what that one does and on a good day it can almost equal a SE shave.

Just for variety, I'm keeping some DE razors in the rotation. I wouldn't have so many right now, though, if I'd discovered SE and injectors earlier.

Based on shave quality, there's no reason for me to have anything other than the injectors. I like the retro coolness of my Gems and Ever Readys though (plus one Star and one Kampfe), and they get used frequently too.

I like the looks of the 1901 and earlier GEMs. It's the main reason I prefer them to the 1912s. The other reason being that they are lighter but I realize this could be exactly the opposite for other people.

Yep - I'm not missing my DE's at all either. The only one left in my rotation is because it has sentimental value (gift from my girlfriend) - a Merkur 1904 Open Comb. Great little DE razor though :thumbup1:

Right there with you. My EJ 89L was by far the best DE I had used, but after two shaves with a GEM 1912 my Jagger seldom gets off the bench anymore.

Well I guess I should consider myself fortunate to have found what I like early in the game. I don't have alot of equipment or expense tied up in DE. I will however try a few more SE razors and ESPECIALLY more injectors of different types(my current ones are E and G)before I nail down my razor of choice. After that then I can turn my attention to brushes and a soap or two.
