In need of help - razor identification!

Hi all,

This is my first post, so please go easy :blushing:

I've been on the hunt for vintage DE razors, came across this in a local online classified:

Advertised as a Gillette 1949 Aristocrat Junior with BRIT PAT No. 430030.

From my research it seems identical to the British Gillette No.16, but I'd just like some expert advice for confirmation. [EDIT : After looking at cutting_edge's list, its more likely a No.53]

Its currently advertised around the $50, would that be a fair price? Also would this be a good first DE razor? Thanks for any help you'd be able to provide guys, much appreciated

It looks like a #21 to me, with the correct case also. It's easily worth more than $50. I don't know how much they sell for nowadays since my RAD eased off a while ago.:biggrin1:
It's an excellent shaving razor.

Thanks for the welcome Greybeard :001_smile

Did some further research and came up with this link from the BST. Was sold as a No.16 - identical case albeit in far better condition, any thoughts?

The 21 is not a 16. They have different mechanisms (the 21 handle has no "end cap"). They're a heavy (74g or so), rhodium coated TTO with a nice and thick handle. It's a much ritzier way of shaving than using a lowly SS, and they have a fairly unique TTO mechanism that does away with end caps.

Mine is a little bent, so i don't shave with it (yet...). :(

Here's what you're looking at:

Thanks very much for the guidance guys. Definitely the #21 :)

Any idea what the present market value for the example shown above?

About a year ago, I picked one up from an eBay seller in South America. It was bent up and had a musty case. Had to pay something like $40 for it.
Here's a nice one that sold on BST. http://badgerandblade.com/vb/showthread.php?t=147375

$50 sounds like a fair price, hopefully it'll clean up nicely! I'll post pics once I give cleaning it a go, once again thanks very much for help - certainly made a newbie feel very welcome.
