What's new

I'm trying to like Feathers.really I am!

I just can't get more than a few shaves out of them. Are they everything most people make them out to be? Yes...for two shaves (for me anyway). Sometimes I get 4 shaves out of them, but the norm is 3. And before the third one is over with it starts skipping and tugging.

I just completed shave #3 with a Feather for this week. I knew in the back of my mind it wasn't going well but somehow that got pushed out of my mind and replaced with "Well, the areas on either side of my windpipe are sensitive no matter what." I should have listened to the first voice. Apparently it decided to go on a coffee break or something.

Applied my alum bar and twitched. Oh the feedback! :scared: I dunno...all I can say is I am sitting here with my neck burning and thinking either I'm a n00b all over again or Feathers just hate me. I actually had to break down and go in search of my Nivea ASB which hasn't seen the light of day in a long time. I absolutely love Feathers for two shaves. But at the price point I can't justify ordering 100 and throwing them in the bin after two uses. I know...YMMV. I'm just not feeling the love from Feather.

I've actually noticed the same thing over the last couple of weeks. The first two shaves are amazing - very smooth and oh so close. The third shave is passable, but the blades are sharp enough that one skip is enough to give you a pretty substantial cut. It's definitely a great shave, but it doesn't perform so well in the durability vs. price comparison.

Feathers can be had for 30 bucks shipped for 100pcs on amazon. Even if you only use them for 2 shaves, you can get 200 shaves for 30 dollars which is 15cents a shave...

do you swish your blade in alcohol after each shave to displace water? could buy you another shave or 2 per blade.

But yeah, feathers have a reputation of not lasting very long. The blade is too sharp so it doesn't give very smooth shaves to begin with and that extra fine edge is damaged/worn very quickly.

The only time Feathers work for me is when I use them in my Tech and then only for 3-4 shaves max. For the price, I'll say with my US made Personna's and my Astra SP's.

Glad I'm not alone.

Side note: Razor burn / irritation is gone. At least it didn't last too long but it was annoying.

Yep. Feathers give me 2 shaves, 2 pass/t-up and then I ditch them.

So what? Still cheaper than carts and NO other blade cuts my beard as well.

YMMV.

I have heard this before in regards to the Feathers. I too seems to be able to get 4-5 good shaves out a blade. This is fine by me. I alternate between these and the Gillette 7 O'clock Yellows. Get 4 shaves out them also.

I do find the Feather shaves better on the 2nd and 3rd shave, compared to the 1st.

I've heard the 7 O'clock black are very similar to Feathers with more shaves, so you might give them a try. Personally I use Astra SP or Red IPs, because they're effective, smooth, and dirt cheap.

I'm not a fan of Feathers either, I've never gotten a really good shave from one and 2-3 shaves is their limit. I much prefer Personna meds.

I don't like Feathers, even on the first shave and that's with a relatively mild DJ89. I know guys rave about them, but for me they are very uncomfortable.

I keep them for 5-6 shaves with relatively consistent results throughout the blades life. They're the only blade I am using at the moment.

Feathers work great for me...for two shaves then I toss them. In the past few months I've used them less and have used Gillette 7OC Blacks, and Super Iridiums more. My shaves with those two blades are just as close, smoother, and those blades last at least 4-5 shaves for me.

There are US-made DE blades?

I too have no love for Feathers. It's hard to beat Astras on price, but that argument hardly holds water if you drop $30 on soap like so many (not I!) do. I actually prefer Astra SS over SP, although not by much.

Same for me, but with a slim on 3. I much prefer Astras or Labs depending on the razor.

Blades can be so very different for each of us depending on razor choice, technique, skin type and other factors. Last week I went back to Astras and Personna Meds in my Slim, and neither was as good a shave for me as a Feather. However, there are plenty of other shavers here that get exactly the opposite results as me. If a blade doesn't feel right to you, put it aside and move onto something else. If you return to that blade after a few months and it still doesn't feel good, it might be time for a PIF.

How do the "Lab Blues" compare to Feathers for sharpness and smoothness? I know it's a YMMV thing, but Feathers are so far my favorite blade. What's the difference between these and Meds?

O.K. let me get this straight. I'm very new to all this and reading about feathers I'm understanding that a "everyday" shaver would use one blade every 2 or 3 days, right? :001_unsur

Depends on a number of different factors. Those with heavier beards might, yes. I can't make any blade last longer than five shaves, Feathers usually last me three. But then, I have VERY coarse and thick facial hair.
