What's new

I'm so sad that the Original Guerlain Vetiver got so many reformilations.

I'm chasing an alternative to the original Guerlain Vetiver...The scent the longevity.....none of the reformulations is like the original one....any ideas?

Well, everyone's experience of scents is a bit different, but I suggest you sample Malle Vetiver Extraordinaire. They seem a bit similar to my nose. Hard for me to judge whether it will have better longevity for you. They're about the same for me.

This is on my classics to try list. Can you help me understand what the scent differences are between the vintage and the reformulation.

The Chandos is a bit of an expert on Guerlain Vetiver around here, so maybe he can chime in. I've only tried the current formula, so I apparently don't know what I'm missing. I still find even the current formula to be one of my favorites from Guerlain.

My memory of testing the newer formulations is that the fragrance is not as heavy on the spices and tobacco as the earlier versions. The newer version is more citric/clean smelling to my nose.

I share your pain -- Guerlain's vintage Vetiver was my daily scent for years before I "discovered" frags. I got one of the modernized bottles before I had ever heard of the term 'reformulation' and knew something was off...

I find MPG's offerings to have a similar depth to the vintage Vetiver. MPG's Racine is one of the most under-rated vetivers out there -- it's on the bright side, but has always reminded me of the old Guerlain more than any other fragrance. Route de Vetiver is great too, but very different.

To this date there is still nothing that approximates what Guerlain's Vetiver does. The current formulation I think captures a lot of the original but I agree there is something missing. The vetiver note in the vintage is saltier, almost celery-like, which is something that I think turns people off. It changes of course on the skin. I just scrolled through ebay and found a paucity of good vintage finds but there are probably a few. My advice is to always look for the EdC in the vintage formulation, which is my favorite.
