What's new

I'm in.

About to take the plunge and found this excellent site. Have been reading and reading.

Backstory. Am 58 years old. Started with a DE back when. Devolved to the disposable, electric... ok, enough of the last 30 crummy years.

Am looking for entry level razor. Gillette FatBoy and Gillette Superspeed seem to be the recommendations for entry level. I have excellent skin and not too harsh beard.

Can ya'll's ring in and give whatever your spirits move you given this brief info? I am really psyched about finding this community, going for a DE, discovering some great blades, soap, the werks... all about discovery which I am looking forward to.

Sooo... whatcha got given a 58 year old on the road to rediscovering coolness.

As a sidenote... dunno if anyone has tried this but awhile ago used Sunrider's shaving cream (Sunrider, a nutritional line of great products) and their shaving product is really excellent. Any recommends here, cool.

Oh, and one more pursuit. I totally am looking for Made in NOT China. NOT India. NOT Japan. Would be a Made in the USA, Made in Germany, you know.... that kind of pursuit.

tx all. I look forward to this discovery path.

I think an old school gillette would be right up your alley. I would try to find a birth year razor or the year you used to shave with would be cool if you had a gillette before.

Edwin Jagger DE89 Awesome Razor, Very Smooth. Then i would go for Vintage or adjustable like a slim or a Fatboy. Ej89 for now about $35.00 or even a Weber All Stainless Steel Razor for about $70.00 . Those are my Recommendations, and Welcome Aboard, Let the Rad, Oops i mean Fun Begin :sneaky2:

Welcome to B&B. Your on the right mental track with what you want. Go with either a Fatboy/Slim adjustable. The SS is nice to. As for blades go wtih Personna(in blue box) as they are made in USA and don't have te glue spots on the blade. Great blades too. You'll hear a lot of talk on where blades are made and many of the best Gillette blades, Gillettte seven O'clock Blacks for example are made in India. Feathers are considered the sharpest and are made in Japan. While many, many of the great blades come out of St. Petersburg Russia. So hopefully you'll make an exception to where you buy blades. I whole heartedly agree with you one made in USA though and that would be the DE Gillettes of old. As for soaps Mama bears is right here in USA. Great soap! As for German there's Calani, Dr. Dittmar and Klr Kabinette. Haslinger is good too but that's Austrian. May I suggest Italy? Some of the best soaps come from there. Proraso, Cella, Valobra, Omega, P160 etc..There are myrad of choices. Also something to pique your interest is a soap from Italy called Tcheon fung Sing. Yeah, a Chinese named soap from Italy. Love this line of soap. Good luck in your pursuit. If you have any more questions we'll help you out thbest we can.
Best regards,

Excellent. To see all these replies so fast. Can tell this is a right place to be, to see the enthusiasm for this.

And interestingly, one of the first things I marked for more consideration was exactly what you said... a Gillette razor from my birth year. I may auger in on this first just to get into the swing of things and go from there. Well done. Alike kinds think great?

Anywayz, will respond to more to the group but thank you for this reply. I am on my way I can see....

Well, this is great. Saged information that I will take in you can count on that. There is nothing greater than experience and wisdom. I am totally open to razors and soaps. So will pursue this information with everything else I am taking in and not short change the pursuit. Having had some other product out of countries of lesser build qualities, I am gunshy. But there is that wisdom and experience thing again.

Very much appreciate all of the replies that came at lightning speed. I will ask, and keep folks informed, of the journey. I look forward to this. Have spent the last several years correcting the mediocre choices that have been foisted upon us in terms of quality and this was in line. I am very lucky to have excellent skin and know that some good choices here will only be good for the future....

Much, much appreciated replies and info from all...

+1

Uh oh. You are entirely too enthusiastic. I was once, too. I have since learned that I don't think I've saved any money doing this, but I definitely am enjoying shaving now.

My story, and age, are similar to yours. I only dabbled in DE at the start, came back to it just this past May. Welcome!

Welcome to Badger and Blade! If you're inclined to have more than one razor, I'd get go for a vintage first (made a birth year razor... look here to figure out what's available from your year http://wiki.badgerandblade.com/US_Gillette_Dating_Information). The adjustables (Fatboy, Slim, Super Adjustable) are awesome as well, give you a great nostalgic feel while shaving, and shave great too. Being plated brass, they are durable as well. Then maybe branch out into some modern American made DEs, like the Weber or Tradere. The modern options will be more expensive (although the vintage adjustables can demand a premium as well depending on condition).

Dig in...there are lots and lots of options, both modern and vintage. Because of all of the variety of products available today, and so accessible (via the Internet mostly), it is the golden age of traditional wet shaving.

First and foremost, welcome to B&B!

Go with a Gillette NEW OC, Gillette 7 O'Clock Black razor blades, Proraso shave cream in tube,(Green, Red, or Blue), and a nice Silvertip brush.
You and your face can thank me later.

Welcome to B&B

If you have not already done so, stop into the Hall of Fame and tell everyone a little about yourself

http://badgerandblade.com/vb/forumdisplay.php/30-Hall-of-Fame

As has been recommended, a Gillette if you want a "vintage" razor. You can keep an eye on the BST forum as these older razors are regularly listed for sale by B&B members at prices that are more reasonable then you will find "in the wild"

For new razors take a look at these:

Edwin Jagger (English made)
Merkur (German made)
Muhle (German made)

One you might give serious consideration to would be either the Merkur 37c or 39c razors. These are two variations of a slant head razor (long and short handle). They are rather mild but extremely efficient cutting machines.

Broaden your horizon and look beyond DE's. Single edge razors offer a great experience for a lot of us.

Oh and don't count out injector razors too :001_smile

Don't worry. Hang out here for a little while and you will have a whole stable of razors to play with

That's true. What would adding wax spots and numbers on each corner do?

Now you are talking... Love the spots. They are there to help the blade stick in the razor, right? :confused1

And those numbers. Do they go in on the left or the right side? This always confused me. :cursing:
