Ikon VS Feather

I'm considering purchasing a "high end" razor. I currently have a number of different razors that I enjoy using but would like a nice matte finish stainless razor. Can anyone fill me in on their experience with either or these razors or if you have another suggestion. To give you an idea of what I like, I seem to enjoy my Edwin Jagger DE89 and my Gillette Super Speed Flair Tip the most. Thank you!

I've never tried the Feather. I believe most people say it is a fairly mild shaver compared to others. I have not been using them very long but I have an Above the Tie Atlas with the R1 head and an Ikon Deluxe Open Comb. Both are stunning to look at and have a nice matte stainless steel finish. The Atlas offers three different solid bar heads (M1 for mild, R1 for regular, and H1 for heavy). The Ikon comes with different head options as well (open comb, solid bar, OSS (open comb on one side and solid bar on the other), and others I'm not as familiar with). The quality of these two razors is top notch. I've got very good shaves with both, but as I've said, I have not very much experience since I got my Atlas a couple weeks ago and the Ikon just yesterday. The only thing I will say is that if you prefer the DE89 or a Super Speed, you may want to look at something like the M1 head for the Atlas or the solid bar head of the Ikon since, for me, the R1 head on the Atlas and open comb head on the Ikon are on the more aggressive side of things. I tend to enjoy aggressive razors that can give a smooth, close shave in 2 passes if necessary, but that's just me.

I received an Ikon OSS for xmas this year and have been using it every day since. My previous daily driver was a EJ DE89. The fit and finish of the Ikon is impeccable. I will say that the balance and angle needed is different and will take some getting used to. To me, the Ikon is more handle heavy and requires a more perpendicular angle to my face. If I was to compare aggressiveness, I would say the OC side is slightly more aggressive than the D89 while the CC side is slight less aggressive. Overall, IMO, the OSS is on the milder side, which suits me fine. A stubborn patch on my neck prone to razor burn has all but cleared up since I've started using my Ikon.

I would say it took me about 10 shaves to feel really comfortable with it. (frankly, the first couple were pretty rough and I was worried that I'd made a mistake in getting the Ikon). I now much prefer the Ikon, especially the open comb side.

I have a Feather AS D1 and a couple of different iKon razors.

Both are well made, look and handle nicely.

It all depends on what you are looking for in a razor. Feather is a smooth mild razor that makes a fantastic daily driver. The iKon razors are a little more aggressive but still not so much that they could not be used every day.

I would be happy to use any of the ones I own every day and not look for anything else... That is... IF I were normal (big if there)

I love the feel of the Feather but I rarely get the shave Im looking for. If you get an Ikon, like the OSS that gives you the option of adding the OC / SB base plates, you can cover the range from Feather mild (OSS) through moderate (OC) and more aggressive(SB)

Yeah, what Turtle said is exactly right. I also have both and both are excellent razors.
Assuming the usual YMMV, I usually shave with the Ikon Deluxe Open Comb

it seems like the consensus is the Ikon is great. They have a package on their site that includes 3 heads, OC, SB, and a 50/50. That seems like it would give me the best of all worlds, although with a 50/50 OC/SB head I suppose I wouldn't need the others.

I have 2 versions of the OC/SB iKon. The fully machined S3S and the more conventional OSS.

Both are fantastic and I see no reason to get the dual OC or SB models since I have them anyway :001_smile

You cannot go wrong no matter what you choose

The Ikon is a precisely made piece of shaving equipment. There are no flaws, fleabites, scratches, problems with fit up, etc. It is perfectly made for what it is intended to be. In theory, the concept of the dual open comb/solid bar head seems to be a good idea, and for some guys it may be, but I don't think I would like it. I probably should try shaving with it for a solid stretch before I make such a bold statement, but I am one of those guys who likes to "set it and forget it".... at least for a single pass. I think I'd rather just use one or the other. Again, these stainless steel razors are made with rather high quality control compared to the less expensive ones, so the quality is going to be there no matter what you choose. The biggest variable is going to be what suits you from a design standpoint. Of the three SS razors I have (Weber, Ikon, ATT Atlas) I would concur with turtle and say that no matter which one you pick, you can't lose.

I have both the Feather and OSS and they are my two favorite razors. Both mild, either will give you a great shave if you like the EJ. The Feather has a smaller diameter handle and a little lighter feel to it as I think the actual weight is less. I could not really pick one over the other although I think the OSS is nicer looking.
