What's new

I want an upgrade... where to go from here?

Gday everyone,

I've been lurking here ever since I started shaving with a DE early 2009. And I think i'm one of the people that has saved money since ditching the cartridges. I've even dragged my brother into it... he shaved with a DE for a couple months, then (as younger brothers are want to do) one upped me by switching to a straight. Funnier still, this christmas we both gave each other shaving brushes as gifts.

Anywho, long story short, I'm looking to upgrade from my merkur HD.

Here is my story...

I used to shave with a gilette sensor, or a mach3. I moved to a DE blade, and bought a "promax" or "premax" (not sure, the shavershop here in australia is dodgy...) (similar to this http://badgerandblade.com/vb/showthread.php?ltr=P&t=87585And that did OK... Then I bought my HD, and it performed much better.

Proraso white has proved to be the ultimate shaving cream. I've tried C&E soap and cream, and while they did the job, they were not as slick as proraso. Faulding smells like sh**.... Trumper violet is pretty good, but much dearer than proraso. And The body shop macca root one was ok, but again, not better than proraso.

Blade wise, I got a sampler pack. Merkur blades are like cheese graters. My face nearly fell off. Astras and Derbys are sharp but tend to give me razor burn. Wilkinson was... average. Feathers i thought at first were the be all and end all, but now I just cant shave with them without taking off a layer of skin too. the Personnas however seem to be my fav. They tend to tug a little more than others, but leave me with NO weepers or burns. (I would go as far as to say I can't get quite as close a shave with them, but the better condition of my skin makes up for it) I am currently testing Treet and Dorco blades. So far the Treet ones seem on par with Astra.

My face is... sensitive. I can't shave overly close without burn or ingrowns. I ALWAYS used to get ingrowns with a cartridge.

SO have you read this far? Are you totally bored? :scared:

Well here is my question. Based on the above info... where do I go from here. I'm seriously looking at a merkur Vision. I like the idea of an adjustable. But what about the slant? Am I missing out if i dont give that a crack? I have the money atm to buy ONE new razor. Im willing to spend the obscene amount on a vision, but this will be my last purchase for years. What do you guys think??

Welcome aboard sir, good intro! :thumbup1: I personally wouldn't spend the money on a Vision but that's without having ever tried one. The Futur might be another option. I personally don't get on with my slant very well but many, many people do. Is there something you don't like about the HD? Have a look at these reviews; they'll give you a good idea of what people are saying about each razor. (And someone will be along shortly to recommend the vintage Gillettes.) :001_tongu Good luck!

Hey there TB,
Thankyou for the reply!

I kind of baulked at the Furtur because of the pop off head. I don't like the sound of that. The slant I am interested in because of the.... legend of the slant :p . I suppose at the end of the day I'm not UNHAPPY with my HD. But I am far from getting BBS shaves every day, or even DFS every day. I can manage a DFS every 4 days, and a BBS once a week or so, but I tend to get ingrowns afterwards. I was kind of hoping an adjustable would let me change to how I felt at the time... IE. if I just wanted to remove the serious stubble I could dial down, or If I wanted to go for BBS if I had a date or something. (ha... right... well, here's hoping...) Then I could load in a feather and really do my best?

Have you thought about trying one of the vintage Gillette Lady Star razors? They are apparently quite good for people with sensitive skin whilst also giving a very good shave. Well worth a look. I'm going to pick one up at some stage to try it out.

I don't think I would do anything. You can happily shave with the HD for years (I know I have). You don't have to be seduced by "better" and more expensive. Most people who buy the Vision seem pretty meh about it. The Futur is a nice razor but I didn't care for the top on it - slick and slippery also. The Progress (or a tricked out one) might work for you if you want to try a new Merkur adjustable.

I was in the same position as the OP, but I wanted to try something a bit more aggressive. I had a Progress in mind for quite some time, with the thought of upgrading it to a Mergress. But, the first thing I did was check the "aggressiveness charts" in the Wiki section here. It gave me great information on which steps I should take next, and have been very pleased with the knowledge I've gleaned, and the direction I've taken in new equipment purchases.

First step IMO... Check the "Wiki"...

And Welcome!

If you have the money for a Vision, you have the money to get a whole mitt full of razors on the bay. Bidding for lots, you could seriously get quite a large bundle of different vintage razors to try out, and a virtual guarantee that if you don't like them you could get your money back out of them.

Vintage Gillettes. (Not wanting to disappoint :001_tt2:). Actually, johnmrson beat me to it, but my suggestion is a bit different. For the money you're looking at spending, you could pick up: A 40's and a 50's style Super Speed, a Slim Adjustable (satisfies that adjustable urge you're feeling), a Tech, a New and an Old Type of some sort. With that collection, you are nearly certain to find one (or more) that works for you, and you get to try the majority of the Gillette platforms that have worked for so many, for so many years.

Simply re-sell any you don't end up liking!

Well, this actually was my first thought. Buying in lots, you can clean up and try a ton of different examples. And by selling off those you decide aren't keepers, you could actually come out ahead financially, with a net profit.

Determined to go new? I'd have a look at the Edwin Jagger lineup. Don't have one yet myself, but from everything I've read here, it sounds like they're far superior to the Merkurs, reasonably priced and seem to universally give a great and comfortable shave.

What are you trying to improve or experience? If you just want to experience different types of razors, well, I think this is how RAD starts - but it's fun.

If you want to improve your shaving experience, there are a couple of things that I would suggest. The tallow (Tabac) and shea butter (Provence Sante) shaving soaps should be experienced. Either of these will last you 6-12 months. Rotating the use of your brushes will help them last longer. There are very nice brushes, that aren't wildly expensive from Omega, Semogue, and Penworks. Don't stop with the blades. You can get 1-2 blade samples that are more economical than the 5-10 packs. Shark, Iridium, Crystal, and the Gillettes should be on your list too.

Lastly, look on BST for people wanting to trade razors for a while to try different types. Or start your own post.

I think this is superb advice, as for the 50's style Super Speed, you would want to try a Red Tip, except for that clarification, I am in complete agreement with T Rick's recommendations. (We will leave the SE Gems and EverReadys for a different day.) This is the way to go.

I would also direct you to our Lending Consortium.

Unfortunately, Corey, who I believe had a Vision and Futur to lend, has not been on the forum for a few months now (has anybody heard from him), nevertheless, most of the vintage Gillettes which T Rick has suggested, are available and in the pool. Have fun and welcome to B&B.

Honestly, I'd go for a Schick Krona or a later model Super Speed. Adjustability is not the holy grail some make it out to be, and the words "Slant" and "sensitive skin" should never appear in the same sentence.

Either of the two razors I mentioned will pair very well with one of the Personna blades.

Gday mate!

Always good to see another Aussie on the site.

I own both a futur and an HD, and can thoroughly recommend the futur. the 'pop-off' head - whilst not the most stylish method of changing blades - has never been a safety issue with me. Regarding the razor being 'slippery when wet', again I've never found that to be the case. Plus its got a great heft to it that makes it so easy to shave.

Also as others have already mentioned, a vintage adjustable is another option. I just picked up a Slim for less than $25 aussie on the BS/T.

YMMV, but I think that the cost of the Vision relative to the alternatives makes it a less desirable proposition.

It's time for a Muhle R89 and some Super Iridiums!!:closedeye

I agree with the above statement but I would go with the Edwin Jagger DE89L. It has a better chrome finish than the Muhle. I own both heads and the Jagger glides just a bit better for me. I too have very sensitive skin. Iridiums are fantastic but Blue Birds seem to work best for me.

Thanks all for your great suggestions... I'll be lurking round ebay seeing what I can find!

When Lamina mentioned the Muhle, he probably ment the old style which is highly aggressive.

You mentioned sensitive skin. That can mean several things. You can probably track razor burn back to technique. Often adjustables end up being left at one setting. I tend towards the more aggressive razors. My standby is a slant. I also use an old version R89 a straight and the old Injectors. Prior to the slants, I used a New.

I am in the same camp just with a Jagger DE89L. I have a Merkur38C barber pole and had a Merkur barber pole slant and also the assorted gillette fatboy and slim adjustable and IMHO the DE89L just kicks butt.:001_smile Just my two cents but you might want to give it a try.
