I think I may have a lanolin allergy :

Hey guys, as the title says, I'm beginning to suspect that I have a minor allergic reaction to lanolin. Every time I use MWF I get little red bumps and irritation, feels like bad razor burn, all over my face where the soap was. I used to attribute this to my inability to make a decent lather with MWF. That is no longer a problem for me, so I want to say that it can't be razor burn. Tonight, I made a practice lather and decided to use it to wash my face. Again, red bumps and inflammation. It won't break my heart to not use MWF anymore, but it does stink that one of the best soaps I may not be able to use because of an allergy. Anyone else encounter this?

I think the lanolin content in Mike's Natural soaps is bearable. I dislike MWF because of some irritation on my cheek. redness before i splash on some a/s. with Mikes I do not have that issue. I use 3 of Mikes in my rotation of 5 soaps

Yep, sounds like an allergic reaction, similar to the one I get from scented soaps. I get blotches and not bumps, but otherwise it's the same. I don't actually have to shave to see the problem - just brushing the lather on my face is enough to bring about the reaction. Fortunately, I'm not allergic to lanolin, which would further limit my soap choices. Having to avoid fragrance and essential oils is bad enough.

Are you ok with other soaps that have scents but no lanolin? What about unscented lanolin soaps like Mike's? Might require a bit of testing to figure out exactly what you need to avoid.

Allergy is my guess, although I have yet to be granted a medical license on this planet. Do you have another soap with lanolin you can test with?

Definitely sounds like an allergic reaction...assuming you've used your particular blade type before with previous soaps and didnt change that as well?

I had the same with MWF , I got some red irritation on the area between my cheeks and my nose. I really loved the scent and performance and lather of MWF.. I wound up giving the rest of the puck to my father in law. He loves it and has not had any problems with it.

I've had a mild reaction to most soaps I've tried that contain lanolin -- not bad, but just enough to make me avoid them. That's too bad, because some soaps I really like, such as Barrister & Mann, would be in my rotation were it not for the lanolin.

Which leads me to ask, are there good tallow soaps out there that do not have lanolin?

Well, the forearm test was negative. I tried a shave today again with it and had no problems. Must have just been irritation from a subpar lather I guess.
