What's new

I just started a batch of homemade AS...

.5C Gin (For the botanicals)
.5C Vodka
.25C White Rum
Zest of 1 lime
.5t Vanilla
dash each of:
Ginger
nutmeg
cinnamon

I figure it will need to sit for about 2 weeks to meld the scents and then I will need to filter it, probably through some coffee filters. I will add glycerin after I filter it.

I'm not sure you can use those types of alcoholic beverages as the base for an aftershave. Alcohol-based aftershave splashes don't use ethanol, they use denatured alcohol that is specifically produced to be used in cosmetics.

Aftershave splashes do use ethanol. Denatured alcohol is ethanol that has stuff added to make it undrinkable.

I googled several homemade AS recipes and they all call for either vinegar (for those who wish to avoid the sting) or for drinking alcohol (ethanol).

2 of the sites I read specifically said to not use Isopropyl Alcohol, though no reason was given.

Anyway, I will post in a few weeks once it gets all filtered and everything.

OOOHH!!! Cloves!! I need to put in cloves!!

As posted before-- the only reason denatured alcohol is used is to prevent winos from drinking the stuff.

Yah, it's a legal thing. You can go nuts if itsnjust for personal use though!

Go the moonshine as! Let us know how it turns out

Sorry to steer this slightly off topic, but would it be okay to use denatured alcohol to make one's own aftershave splash? I'm a couple years shy of 21 but I'd really like to try and brew some of my own stuff this Christmas.

I would guess that the denat. alc. sold in hardware stores and the like is probably not cosmetic grade. The chemicals added to denat. may be toxic in construction grade alc.

Denat. is just regular ethanol with things added to make it un-drinkable. Plain old liquor or everclear is just fine.

Use liquor if you want to smell like rum or some other spirit of choice. If you do not want a booze smell, buy a neutral spirit that is high proof, like 150 proof everclear or something along those lines.

Have fun!

I just took a sniff of my little experiment.

WOW!

It is amazing smelling. There is a definite note of ethanol smell, though the clve, lime and cinnamon cover it a bit. The booze smell is much rediced. I think with another 2 weeks of sitting, I will be ready to filter it and try it.

My only real concern is that the ethanol smell will not mellow enougha nd putting it on will just make me smell like a drunk Dandy.

Anyway, I have high hopes and the clove and lime go great together

I will post when I try it.

!

Hey fellas--

I know this might be overkill, but just in case anyone else is interested in brewing their own AS, the ethanol found in hardware stores is not a good choice--the poison added to make it undrinkable can be absorbed in the skin. Some have told me they used it with no problems, but I wouldn't tempt fate.

The primary alcohol in used in aftershave is ethanol. It's fine to use Vodka and Gin for home use in making your AS; the higher proofs would theoretically present less contamination problems. Some people use Everclear but you'd want to dilute with water a little more.

The SD (denatured) type ethanol is what the large manufacturers use by law (I'm pretty sure it's a law or Reg). It's still ethanol. I would guess a lot of them use bittering agents today to "denature" them.

Oh, and do not use hardware store "denatured" alcohol.

I'd be worried I'd walk around and people would think I was a drunk or something from the alky smell.

Add some glycerin and aloe to your mix- works great!

I use cheap Vodka in my homemade AS and EDT's.
