What's new

I have two pens, need a third.

Hit the web and find a used Pelikan you like. I have used them for decades and prefer them to top of the line Mont Blancs.

I like the fine tip of the Pilot and the general feel of the Lamy. Just plan to use it for daily note taking, letter writing.

If you want an inexpensive but reliable pen, I think most people should have a Platinum Preppy in their stable. It can easily be converted into an eyedropper, and if you lose it, it won't be a big loss.

A Platinum Plaisir is the same as a Preppy, but the body and cap are made of metal. So, you won't be able to convert it into an eyedropper, but there's less of a concern for breakage. Plus, they look a little fancier than Preppys.

One downside to the two Platinum pens is that they have proprietary cartridge/converters.

Another suggestion is a Jinhao X450. It has a slightly triangular grip section, somewhat similar to the Lamy Safari. The pen is a little thicker than the Safari though. Also, I think they only come with a medium nib, but it's been awhile, so I'm not positive if that's still the case. One of the nice things about the X450 is that the nib is pretty easy to swap, and will take most #6 replacement nibs. It comes with a converter as well.

Slickness is a sickness
My path is (was?) very similar. Pilot Metro and Lamy Safari were among my first fountain pens.

When I decided to buy a "next-level" pen, I purchased a TWSBI Diamond 580AL in Prussian Blue. It's a beautiful pen, and my M nib writes like a dream...at around $70US.

There's a youtube channel called DoodleBud that has some great videos about different fountain pens. He just posted a top 10 for under 35USD. There are some very affordable pens at your price point.

I got a Hongian A3 longblade and really like how it writes. If your writing is smaller, it might be worth sticking with a fine/extra fine. Asvine and Jinhao are worth looking into.

He had some good suggestions...and in my price range. Thanks.

My Plaisir writes circles around my Metro...as well as many of my other pens. Cap design keeps the nib ready to write if you store it away for a while. Yes, Platinum carts are proprietary, but so are Pilots' and Lamys'.

I think my problem with the Metro (and it's fancy cousin, the Pilot Knight) was the step-down at the section. Can't find a grip that makes long use comfortable.

You have a Pilot Metro and a Lamy Safari in which they both have in-house nibs.

If you want another pen with an in-house nib, suggest you look at Parker Jotter. I just saw on amazon.com.au, they are circa $40.

Having said that as I had suggested earlier, checkout TWISBI as well.

What do you people do with Pens, recall why I was in Insurance sale, ik had nice fountain Pen to write policies, used GREEN INK, as new policies paid bills, and GREEN was color of money.

Seldom use pen or pencil any longer, except to write too do list daily on old recycled envelope.

Too little, actually.
Writing notes and tiny bit of journaling 👍
