What's new

I gave away my Muhle R89 and 200 Blades!!!

For those of you that don't know I'm deployed right now, and of course I brought all my shaving gear! Two Red Tips, Two SuperSpeeds, a Merkur 34C, and a Muhle R89. A bunch of blades, and I was PIF'd some brushes from some very fine gentlemen on this site! I've been DE shaving for two years now, but was still trying to find a good blade. I've been back and forth between Carts and DE due to the fact I couldn't find a blade that would get me close and smooth consistently. I had reached the end of my rope. I wasn't going to let all this shaving gear go to waste though. So I gave my Muhle R89, 100 Sharks, and 100 Gillette 7's (green) to a buddy here, and he is hooked!
The VERY next day I popped in an Astra in my Red Tip to give it one last shot and Wow! Four shaves later my face looks great and I'm really embarrassed that I have a few Mach 3's in my room! (I posted about the Astra a few days ago you may have seen it) Now I regret giving away the Muhle! Only slightly though. I've had a few PIF's sent my way so I guess I'm returning the favor by recruiting a new shaver! So heres the question. Should I buy another Muhle R89 or the EJ89!? I miss that razor so much I just have to replace it right??? Does anyone have experience with both razors? I'd like to buy the more mild razor, or are the heads identical? Thanks in advance for any info!

Well I'm no expert, but from what I have been reading here the heads are indentical. I believe that the two companies teamed up to create the head. Maybe someone can add more to this? All I can tell you is if you miss it, it needs to be replaced. Stay safe out there!

They didn't really "team up"
Mule is the manufacturer of the heads. EJ makes (or more likely has made) some really cool handles, but the only differences are the handles and price/availability.
They also manufacture EJ aftershave lotions, and perhaps other EJ products.

Well I just pulled the trigger on the EJ89! Have to ship it to the SWMBO and have her re-ship it to me. Amazon really sucks with APO shipping!

If you're liking the red tip, the 89 may not be aggressive enough for you. You might consider picking one of the adjustables. Perhaps, since you've had good luck with the red tip, a Fat Boy or Slim. Or you could go with something modern like a Futur.

I have both and the heads are identical. I do think the EJ is a better buy as both are nice razors. The EJ handle is a bit heavier. HTH- Frank

I really do like the EJ handles.
Muhle does have a couple available other than the standard chrome/black/white, but EJ has a much, much better variety including some really large ones for those with Carpal Tunnel or other grip issues.

The muhle has a lighter handle than the EJ. If you want the heavier EJ I would recommend the barley chrome, which is the nicest looking razor on the market.

Yeah...one of these days I'll get around to getting one of those. I do love my DE86l though.

I tried one when I was about a year into the DE world. I noticed it was a pretty smooth shave, but not any closer. Plus I had to go really slow or I'd risk slicing into an artery!

The 89 is a great first razor, noted for its smoothness. You did a nice thing for a friend, and now you will have another 89. Now you just need your friend to let you try out some of his soaps, and return the favor.

The R89 and DE89 have Identical heads, and in my opinion, the weight of the DE89 handle is by far better, than that of the R89. I have the R41 (same handle as the R89) and the DE89...I always switch the EJ handle, to the one Im using that day..I never use the Muhle handle..Its very pretty, and high end looking, but thats about it..............Good Choice!! And Thank You For Your Service!!!!!!!!!!!
