What's new

I can't believe it!

there have been far more expensive razors on ebay. there was a mint condition Gillette President that went for $500+ last week

Great to see fine shaving steel. The "Buy It Now" auctions don't mean a heck of a lot; there's still a 195 Adjustable on the 'Bay for $995 with no takers. That President last week, though, actually sold for $500.

OK then, how about most expensive V-3 Super Speed.

Actually you don't see V3's for sale much if at all. This is actually the first one I've seen since I got mine 5 months ago. Mine isn't mint but still pretty nice. Cost me $31.

I have seen SS going for $1500. I am not sure if they ever sold at that price.
If this is the only razor you are going to own "ever" then its a bargain otherwise "move on"

That's actually a 195 Adjustable Bottom Dial! That razor was never released for sale to the general public making it very rare. Most serious collectors will tell you that's about the going price for that razor in mint condition with the case.

No. Nothing will make this a bargain. It's a nice, but unexceptional razor. There's a range of years that will give you the same shave and if you go for the english made razors you'll get a nicer finish to boot.

If/when someone buys this it wouldn't be as a shaver. It is strictly a collectible. It is an extremely exceptional razor. I have only seen a handful of V-3 prototypes and have never seen one in this good of condition and as a set. This was the very first razor to have been stamped with a date code. It is very, very collectible.

You can compare it to the 1909-S VDB Lincoln penny. It is just another penny with the face value one one cent. It is almost identical to the 1909-S except for one tiny feature. It is stamped with the initials of the artist, Victor David Brenner, who produced the portrait of Lincoln used on the obverse. You can expect to pay around $1,400 for one of these in a condition similar to the V-3 Super Speed.

It also states that the date code is upside down.
Not only is it rare, it is a mistake too, and to further your coin analogy, mis-struck coins go for a premium as well.
So this would be like your VDB penny, but if they forgot to stamp the obverse.

Actually, all of these I have seen have the date codes upside down in relation to the rest of the stamping. The V and 3 are not on the base of the plate as is normal, either. They are on either side of the neck of the handle on the raised diamond area.

I stand corrected. To this point, the only "Super Speed" I'd seen treated with any collectible reverence had been the Ranger Tech.

Interestingly - the seller shavemaster1, apparently used to be ptbsr and changed his name. I wonder what prompted that change? As ptbsr he was getting a reputation of blocking any bidder who asked him any question about his razors.

That's the same seller listing the 195 bottom adjuster for $995.

My V3 is not upside down. It is in the exact location with identical font. It doesn't appear to be altered at all. Can it be a fake? It doesn't look like one. It also has the abbreviated pkg on the inside.

Welcome back, Achim.
