What's new

I am interested in buying Simpson Berkeley 46B. Am I right ?

Hi !

I am a beginner, about 3 months in wet shaving, enjoying all this so much and developed razor-acquisition-disorder (more than 20 in 2 months), blade-acquisition-disorder (about 1.000 blades) and shaving-cream-acquisition disorder (about 12 creams including TOBS and Musgo Real). Only have 1 soap, Arko, with Palmolive ordered on its way.

But until now I only got one pure badger Chinese Frank Shaving brush and one Turkish #6 boar or horse brush (also a Semogue unbranded that I still did not use). Comparing these two I prefer FS pure badger for comfort and ease of lathering.

I prefer direct face lathering with all my creams

I read several reviews about Simpson Berkeley 46 B best badger wich appears to be a nice beginner brush for about only US$ 50.

Will I have substantial gain in terms of easy lathering and pleasure, comparing to my FS and Turkish, with this Simpson brush ?

I do enjoy some backbone (not too soft bristles) and light facial scrubbing and prefer brushes that did not ask for "that much" product. I do not have experience with other sizes of brushes but I think maybe smalller is better but not too small.

It is fine for me buying 46 B or do you recommend me anything else ? This costs about US$ 50 but a brush up to US$ 100 that can last all life would be fine.

The Berkeley is a great little brush. The Beat grade hair is nice and scrubby, and it is great for face lathering. If you bowl lather, you might find the handle a bit small. You might consider the Simpson Colonel (X2L), which is a fantastic all around brush that works well for bowl and face lathering.

Face lathering with a pure badger would be hard on my sensitive skin. If you are ok with that, then probably Simpson Best would be very nice. I think you will be impressed with the brush.

If you are willing to go up to $100, Simpsons Duke 2 in best badger hair is, IMHO, the absolute best buy, bar none. A superb face latherer with soaps and creams; great flow-through, not a hog. Nice and dense but not too dense.

If you want to spend less, Simpsons Colonel X2L in best badger hair is also a truly excellent choice. Just remember, you want BEST grade of badger hair, not the PURE grade.

I think the 46 is absolutely the best deal that Simpson offers
Do follow the advice of a couple of the other posters and get it in Best grade

One of my favorite brushes, still a bargain. It's the right thing to do.

+1

Duke 2 is my top pick when I face lather.

Other contenders if I want a change from the Duke 2

Simpsons:

Duke 1
Case
Beaufort B4 (in pure)... VERY stitchy and stiff... Good change up brush but it might be hard to use every day because of the stitch

RV 20mm custom silver tip set very low (50mm)
Rubberset 200-1 barber handle in Pure.

Face lathering line up at the turtle den (need to take an updated pic)

I bought a Berkeley in Best and now it's the only brush I use. I mostly bowl lather triple milled with it, and it's a champ. I absolutely love my Berkeley!

Ok I will think some more days if I buy Berkeley 46 (wich I am pending to) or Duke 2 as some of you nice guys suggested.

I'll keep you informed when I decide.

Thank you all !

Hi!

After thinking about 3 days I gave a shot on Duke 2 at West Coast Shaving.

It will take 3 to 5 weeks to arrive here in Brazil then I tell you all what I think

Thank you all for opinions !
